How did you get started ? When I was in college, I used to wonder why it was all of my friends could afford to go to Cancun for Spring Break. Then I'd stare at my ever-growing pile of records and remember exactly why. ;)
I just decided to start buying records, really. I took about a year to think and make sure I *really* wanted to start spinning, and on January 3rd of '97 I bought my first 8 records at Alien records. Now I'm up to 11+ crates, an MPC2000xl, a Korg Trinity, 3 1200s, and a DJM-500 mixer.
Who inspires you musically and why? If I had to pick the two most important ones though, I'd have to say Scot Gray and Dustin Swint(8man). Scot is the single biggest reason why I started spinning. He was the guy I watched back in '95-'96 at Ohms, and watching him is what made me realize how a DJ can turn music from just records into a powerful force to move people. Dustin has been more of a recent inspiration. He's really pushed me to make tracks, and he's always giving me tips on how to add to what I've made and what I need to focus on. He's been a big influence on the tracks I've made thus far, and I'm very fortunate that my first tracks are coming out on his label(a38 records) in the fall.
Lots of people, from big stars to locals: Dylan Drazen, Mad Wax, Dave Ralph, Cari Lekebusch, Joel Mull, Merrick Brown, Michaelangelo, Tray Stylz, and Ubiquitek to name a few.
How much have you changed musically since you started? I'm also trying to break out and form my own sound, as I've been trying to do since Day One. I don't want to be another token techno DJ, and I think continuing to study the music and the musicmakers helps in that. I'm always learning, and I imagine I'll keep learning new tips and tricks throughout the course of my career. Any DJ that thinks they've learned it all is stunting their growth. If you can't learn anything new, you will stagnate.
Oh lord, what a question. Well for one thing I don't suck quite as badly as I did back then. ;) I think any DJ goes through a process of revision and refinement during the course of their career, and that's definitely true for me. My sound is much more cohesive and fluid these days compared to when I first started out.
Name two of your favorite Tracks.
Andreas Kramer - Der Leitwolf - Construct Rhythm
District 1 - Absolute Music - Auk
What do you think of the current state of the Dallas Scene? I try to help support techno in Texas, though I can't help as much as I'd like. I have to give guys like Kung Fu Pimp and Noah from Ark much respect for bringing the big techno names into this state. Jeremy from Prototype seems to be coming around as well, which I'm glad to see. There's always more work to be done though. Hell, I may just throw another couple smaller events to see if I can help out some too. I'll let you guys know when there are more details.
Well, I don't think there's enough techno. That seems to have been a problem for Dallas for many years now, but it looks like things may be changing for the better. Joey Beltram was here recently, and Misstress Barbara is coming in a couple months. I think the success of techno in other local markets(Kharma Fridays in Houston for example) has really started to open the door for hard techno in this town. I've been leaning hard on all the promoters to book techno, and hopefully with the help of the growing techno armada in Texas we can get more acts here.
When is your next gig?
08.10.01 - Drunken Master DJ Competition - Austin, TX
08.31.01 - Face/Off - College Station, TX
10.06.01 - Airport 3 - San Antonio, TX
10.27.01 - Meltdown 3 - Dallas, TX
Do you want to thank anyone?
First and foremost, my parents. My dad gave me my first turntable, and my parents have supported me throughout every hair-brained scheme I've used to try and make it big. I'd also like to thank Mad Wax; I learned more from him than anyone else. He's really been a mentor for my DJ skills. Tray Stylz has been a great help to me in many aspects, and his counsel is always appreciated. Lastly, I'd like to thank my fans. I don't know how many there are out there, but anytime I see someone say something positive about my sets I try to make sure I thank them. Thanks to all of you, and keep recruiting soldiers in the techno armada. :)
