How did you get started ?
From there I
kept in the retro and industrial club DJ scene with
pretty regular residencies until in August of 99 I
fell upon Atmospheric Drum and Bass. I had always
listened to and liked electronic music before, but
nothing had ever caught my ear like those drifting
melodies over fast breaks with smooth basslines. So I
started buying nothing but atmospheric records,
changed my DJ name and stopped taking gigs for retro
and industrial. From there I've had to rebuild the
name I had in other scenes, and I think it's very
funny that most people don't realize how long I've
actually been doing this.
October of 1996 a new goth/industrial club opened up
in New Orleans. Turns out I knew the owners through
friends of friends, and used that connection to get a
job "DJing." The head DJ had me spin shit slot,
basically play until people got there, and then cover
after most everybody left, while he was teaching me to
spin. I was playing 80's music on one night and
goth/industrial on another. In the 8-9 months I had
residency there I learned a lot, as well as getting
completely hooked on spinning. I still remember my
first solid beatmix more clearly (and more fondly)
than I remember my first girlfriend.
Who inspires you musically and why?
Andy Smith from Portishead and DJ Cam (among many
others), for using the turntables as an instrument and
pushing the limits of expression in DJing. Daniel
Meyer (Haujobb) for consistently amazing me with his
production skills and the depth in his sounds. Casper
for always being on the forefront of new styles (ie
not afraid to do something different because he feels
it).
How much have you changed musically since you started?
Well I went into some explanation of this above. As I
started getting more and more into the technical
aspects of mixing I got frustrated with the song
structures and possibilities of spinning pop music.
Also, I started spinning when I was 17, and it's only
natural that the style of music that speaks to me and
what I want to say with my sets has changed as I've
grown. I've also picked up 2Step Garage, Downtempo,
and Deep House as genres I spin, all of which are an
even further step away from the style I played before.
Name two of your favorite Tracks.
2 favorite electronic tracks:
Honorable mention goes to anything FSOL and Autechre
have ever done.
I'm gonna cheat a bit here:
2 favorite tracks of all time
1) "24 Hours" by Joy Division
2) "In Uns - Hope" by Beefcake
1) "Timeshift" by Future Engineers (First atmospheric
record I bought)
2) "The Battle" by Wookie
What do you think of the current state of the Dallas Scene?
In New Orleans as well as Dallas and soon the rest of the
country prosecutors seek to use the "crack house" law
to put party promoters and venue owners in jail. This
is not 1991 where we can break into a warehouse and no
one will be the wiser. This is 2001, and being
devoted to the electronic music scene is a serious
responsibility.
I think we should see a ban of all
ages parties. I think we should see a no tolerance
approach to drug use at parties. I think we need to
see more smaller, intimate events that not only
provide the kind of atmosphere we want to portray to
the media, but also the kind of atmosphere we want to
portray to those new to the scene. If your first
party had been 7500 mostly fucked up people would you
have any idea of what the scene was really about? And
if we continually provide this kind of out of control
atmosphere can we really blame the police and the law
for wanting to shut us down? Can we really blame the
media for saying it's all about drugs? I think things
have gotten out of hand, and unless we do something
now it will only get worse.
I think the "large party" mentality that is prevelant
in our scene currently is destroying it. I'm NOT
going to run around saying it needs to be back
underground, but I will say that several of the
upcoming large parties will make or break us in the
eyes of the media and the police. The club and party
scene needs to be more informed and active in making
sure we continue to have our freedom. New laws are
being drafted to push this culture down, and old laws
are being used in new ways to keep it there. The
dance permit laws are under review, and the council
seeks to make all dancing in Dallas stop at 2am.
When is your next gig?
Every Wed at Sandbar check out Dallas (and Texas)
first all 2step garage weekly, with me, Phooka, Surge,
and SoulFonik. Also every Friday at Sandbar me, DJ
Mythic, and guests spin atmospheric drum and bass
upstairs. Everything else is tenative at the moment.
Do you want to thank anyone?
Everyone who listens. (And Eiwe and Annesta for asking me to be on this page)
