How and when did you get started on this dj thing?
Way back in Middle School, I was the one that kept up with the new music. I would put together tapes for friends and it just kind of evolved from that. I did most of my growing up in Shreveport, and was exposed to "Miami bass" and South Louisiana "booty beats" (haha- remember Kyper & Dynamix II?). In 1987, I moved to Dallas and widened my musical tastes while finishing High School. I moved on to things like Ministry, The Cure, Depeche Mode, and Cabaret Voltaire and into house music like Inner City, A Guy Called Gerald, and so on. I made some good friends back then that introduced me to the club and party nightlife. After High School, I returned to Shreveport to attend Centenary College. This was back when the drinking age was still 18 inside nightclubs. In 1991, while at Centenary, I got involved with the student radio station and started a radio show called "Friday Night Rave." It caught the attention a few folks that really wanted to start something fresh, and before I knew it, the big club dj in town (Chuck Davis) took me under his wing and showed me how to actually mix records.
For those not familiar, care to fill us in on what Edgeclub is?
It's a radio show (Saturday nights on 102.1) that shows a glimpse of what's going on in the electronic scene.
How long have you been doing Edgeclub and how do you think it's changed over the years?
I've been doing Edgeclub since October 1994. The Late Night Guest Mix & the Midnight House Classic are features that have been a mainstay. Musically, it's changed over time. I'd like to think the show has evolved with the music by keeping up with the current trends while having a grip on where it all started. Obviously I can get away with a little bit more musically these days since people are more open to the sound.
What is the funniest and the most embarrassing moment you've had on or off the air?
Hmmm… There has been a lot of those. One time I got all the way up to the station and was running a bit behind because Addison was having their 4th of July celebration. They had the fireworks and rides and everything right behind the station, so traffic was awful. I finally get to the station and start to unload everything needed for the show. I went to the trunk to get my records and look in and realized I had left them at my house on the doorstep. I had set them down to run back inside because I forgot my cell phone. I made poor Edwin Watson go get them and fight all that traffic while I started the show without music. A trip that would normally take 15min took almost 2 hours. I played a bunch of various mix cd's. I bet nobody noticed.
How does your musical selection differ from your radio show and when you play out?
It depends on what is going on. I pride myself on being able to fit the moment. Meaning, I'm not going to play deep house while opening for Fatboy Slim. I'll save that set for when I open for somebody like Mark Farina. Edgeclub is a reflection of several different genres. I try to capture the moment by playing the cream from each crop (so to speak). My sets in clubs differ because they will be a little more focused on what needs to be played to keep the dance floor moving. Those club sets will be completely different from what I'd play in a warehouse or a massive. It's just some weird formula that I have and it has worked well for me.
