September Profile: DYKAST
Contact: dykast@dykast.net |
Who are the artists in Dykast and can you tell us a little bit about each one of you?
Carbon Fourteen - [the musical man] He started producing music at the tender age of 15, albeit badly. Started out as a drummer in a punk band then moved on to writing disco house, bad breaks, and finally he discovered an undying love for Dnb. Deeply influenced by Amon Tobin, Ed Rush + Optical, Matrix, and Bad Company he has constantly strived to push him self to the next level of awareness in his production (and when he doesn't his best friend Erich yells at him).
Etech - [the engineer extraordinaire'] He Started out Djing in 1995 playing at raves and clubs in the Dallas area, spinning Breaks and Trance. He settled down with a family and got out of the scene all together in 97.He met C-14 at college in 1998 and since they have been working together on many projects.
Phooka - [creativity director] Chris' passion for music started very early on with drumming. He moved swiftly from the drums to turntables and has steadily been progressing to the production standpoint since. Now with almost 10 years of experience he holds many residencies playing diverse styles all over Dallas. Also he is the DJ for Stinkbug, an industrial / hard rock band, and has toured with them all over the US.
How much have you changed musically since the beginning and why?
We have changed immensely since our inception partly because of our own progression as well as the musical progression of the music itself. Dnb is constantly evolving and aside from just out technical skill increasing, the living and changing sound of Dnb always pushes us to evolve with it. The music pushes us to produce tunes that push the specific sounds we see as the future mainstays of our genre.
What kind of music can we expect to hear from you?
Cutting edge Dnb that pushes our creative limitations and our intellectual boundaries as musicians. We will always represent the future sounds of our scene with dubs and new original material, most of which can be heard by us months before ever even signed or released.
Who or what inspires you musically and/or otherwise and why?
YOU READY? (Here's the list...)
ALL KINDS OF MUSIC, from scenes such as the underground punk scene, emo, hardcore, breaks, rap, metal. Progressive rock… well all rock really.
Bands and artists like: Fugazi, Minor Threat, Bad Religion, PHISH, Primus, Pink Floyd, Dizzy Gilespy, Thelonius Monk, BT, Slayer, Josh Wink, NIN, Tribe Called Quest, Black Sheep, the Doors, The Beatles, Hendrix, Led Zeppelin and 311…
To tell you the truth we are inspired by the crowds and all music, we constantly hear songs from all time periods and genres and think WOW, HOW CAN WE USE THIS… its like these bands laid the foundation for all groups that came after them and if you aren't inspired when you hear then you missed their artistic visions.

What are your thoughts on Dallas electronic music compared to the rest of the nation?
Compared to the rest of the nation I think we are generally in good standings. Our night is going well compared to our colleagues nights in other cities and turn out is usually a good indicator of the scene's health.
Do you think Dallas producers get the recognition they deserve?
We think producers get the credit they deserve based on the music they write, not where they come from.
Where can we go buy your music?
Core Records, Illmatic records, and record shops as such around the globe.
What do you think of the current state of the Dallas Scene? What do you think we could do to improve it?
The Dallas music scene is both good and bad at the same time. There is good music to be heard all over, the problem is that since raves are dead and the scene is all in clubs now, the average person listening to electronic music hears it as the background cacophony to their symphony of mating. In other words its music people get drunk and try and meet people to fuck to. It's less about the party or the tunes and more about the sex to a lot of them. The scene really needs a shot in the ass, or some really good E. Unfortunately the problem is that with our government, and legal limitations, the idea of throwing parties like the ones we used to take part in is simply nothing more than a faded dream or sepulchral of a time since past.
Any gigs/residencies/releases coming up?
We play at the Ruby Room every Tuesday, other than that check with your local record shops for events; we are playing all over all the time for the most part.
Do you want to thank anyone?
We would like to thank Jon Riehl, for funding the dream behind Dykast and believing in the musical abilities of his family and friends, and any clubs we may hold residency in, as well as all the die hard people who show up every week at those nights to support us.
Do you have anything else to add?
My head hurts… Did I get an A'?
