What is the best thing about djing or MCing?
DJing - I like the crowd reaction. I like being able to kind of have control of the dancefloor and the atmosphere with the music. MCing - I like being able to interact with the crowd.
What was your favorite event to play at? And why?
Almost every show we did at Trees was amazing. It's really hard to pick a favorite.
Any gigs/residencies coming up you'd like to list?
TRUST!- Thursdays @ Home Bar with Squirt and myself playing Drum and Bass.
Groovology- Sundays at Home Bar with Mundo, Mark J, Tiny and I.
March 11th- Dj Ink @ Trust!
What do you think of the current state of the Dallas scene? And what do you think we can do to improve it?
I think the scene is on the upward swing. I think the economy will be picking up this year and this should help bring back the scene more. I really do wish there were more raves. There were many bad things about them but, raves exposed a lot of people to this music and culture. The lack of raves has hurt the scene somewhat because there isn't a new wave of people coming into the scene. There's a pretty high turnover rate when it comes to the scene but it was always balanced with new people coming in. I do enjoy the fact that almost everything is at a bar or club. I love having good sound, good music and being able to drink. I think people need to collaborate more. There's so much going on right now. I'd like to see more people working together, especially different genres. There's so much talent in Dallas but musically it is very segregated. Its not that a house head won't go to a dnb show or vice versa, you just don't see it together much. I'd love for that to change.
What do you see that other music artists do that annoys you?
I think there's a lot of younger djs that don't know about progression. I think there should be 2 types of progression. I think the music throughout the night should progress. No one wants to hear hard as nails dnb at nine in the evening. I think people want to smash the dancefloor so bad they forget about this. Also there needs to be progression within a set. Don't play 8 tunes from the same label or artist in your hour long set. Don't stick to just one style. Tell a story. I promise you if you break it down and smooth it out, it will have so much more emphasis when you take it back up.
Do you want to thank anyone?
Shouts out to: Covert Ops family- We've been through hell and back together. Groovology kru- Three years I still can't believe we've been doing Sundays for this long. Squirt- I'm looking forward to Trust! And the things we can do with it. Scientia family- Respect. Zedan - Thank you for giving me the opportunities when I was starting out. 32 Degrees (RIP) - You all know who you are. It may be dead but the memories and the friendships will go on forever. Core Records- Thanks for everything over the years. I think this is a good year for us. Thanks to everyone that bought a Scientia record, booked me, paid for one of the shows we threw, played for us. Without you there is no us.
Do you have anything else to add?
I'm at Core Records: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday. If you ever have questions or need help with records or such give me a holler. I'll try to help you out. The last thing I can say is try and perpetuate the scene and the music. If you've been around a while try and bring a newer dj up. If you are that newer dj and you become established, try and do the same thing for another young dj.
