December Profile: Red Eye

By Nina Khachatourian

Standing in the shadows of the Starck Club while Mike DuPreist teased the audience with who knows how many different tracks coming in and out of a 15 minute record was something Scott Canfield found himself doing quite often before he became a staple in the international music scene. Back then it was typical for Scott to be on the sidelines in awe of the early revolution happening in Dallas… a musical revolution that is. Dallas clubbers like Scott were absorbing a new scene with fresh faces and even fresher music. The time was the late 80s. The sounds were futuristic, funky and irresistible.

Scott’s uncle was a disco dj in Austin who often played synthesizers and keyboards around him as a child. And anytime he visited his grandmother, Scott made a b-line for the music room in the house. His grandmother, who was a classically trained pianist and singer, encouraged Scott to experiment with music at an early age.

The early exposure to music in combination with experiencing the vibe at Starck prompted Scott to begin working the decks and playing around with different kinds of gear in the studio. Fast forward about 15 years and Red Eye has made a considerable name for himself world wide. Not only that, but unlike so many Dallas producers that seem to be more popular outside of Texas, Scott is very much admired by *Dallas* dance music lovers… ‘cept ‘round these parts we just call him Scotty.

In the early 90s he hooked up with another now veteran Dallas dj, A-1, to form Nasa Project. Their 1992 “High Friends In Places” EP was praised across the globe and literally thrust the two Texas boys into the international spotlight. Tracks like "Dominator Is Dead" and the cowboy inspired rave anthem “Textacy” were resonating throughout speakers worldwide. Shortly after came a once in a lifetime gig co-hosting the legendary radio show Edge Club with Jeff K. And so from dingy warehouse raves across the country to Dallas’s hottest night spots, Scotty has brought his special flavor to the floor for listeners to enjoy. We recently spoke to Red Eye and as it turns out he is still fired up and working fiercely as a dj and producer in his hometown of Dallas.
