December Profile - Redeye

December Profile: Red Eye

By Nina Khachatourian

How did you get started?

I honestly don't know. I was going out and had been buying music just to have it. The next thing I know, people were letting me spin in their clubs. This was back in the 80's when "mixing" wasn't such an artform. Most of the songs had odd measured intros and breaks and the edits weren't always "on". It was new beat, industrial, new wave type stuff. It was about programming really, playing the right songs at the right time. I just remember sometimes being on the floor and thinking, "I wouldnít have played this song after that last one."

But if I had to pick THE moment, it was at a club called SPARX. I was standing in the dj booth and the dj (Ed) goes, "Play the next record." He didnít come back for an hour, and I just played. That was the first time I played in a club.

What kind of music can we expect to hear from you?

It depends on what kind of day I'm having and the venue. I like a lot of styles, and I would never want be forced into a musical corner. Sometimes it's dark, funky, banging, deep, banging, trippy, and then sometimes its just straight up house... who knows. Music is such an emotional thing to me and I want the people to feel whatever my emotions are. I think one of my best qualities is that you canít expect to hear a certain sound from me. Is Dallas a house music town? Why?

Dallas house roots run deep, there was a lot of house culture in Dallas from the beginning, even when it hadn't blown up yet. Jeff Steel had his "Jackiní the Box" show on KNON, Mike DuPriest had Starck, and then you had Luke Sardello and Tim Schumacker working at Billís Records schooling people, etc. So D-town has had its foot in the door from the get go.

Who impresses you musically and why?

From a dance music point of view off the top of my head I would have to say Audio Bullys, Basement Jaxx and Soulwax to name a few. I appreciate the chaos of what they represent. The whole "fuck shit up" vibe really speaks to me. But thereís also Erykah Badu, Timbaland, Kanye, Depeche, Gil Scott Heron, Madonna and a ton of others. Thereís too many to name. I'm impressed by anyone who pushes the envelope, does their own thing, doesnít care about whatís going on around them, and is willing to take a chanceÖ basically, anyone who gives the middle finger to the status quo.

Do you listen to non-electronic music?

Always! At home I listen to a lot of rock, punk rock, 70's soul and stuff like that. I dig and like the Sex Pistols, The Clash and The Exploited. I LOVE KEANE!!!! Also The Carpenters, ELO and Supertramp. I also like really cheesy ballads from the 70's and 80's. My at home music would surprise people. You have to listen to everything. Inspiration comes from all directions.

What are some favorite events you have played?

My most memorable event was the first time I played Limelight in NYC. Michael Alig came up to me in the booth of Club One and says, "Your music is so tomorrow. Why are you in Dallas? You should come play in New York!" Shortly thereafter, I'm at Limelight, and the place is 3 levels of people packed. Keoki stopped his record and gets on the microphone and introduces me as his favorite dj in Texas. So theres thousands of people staring up at me, and Iím starting my first record from dead silence. I thought I was going to puke my heart out of my throat. Club kids, box dancers, everyone just staring. So I play my timeslot and Keoki told me to keep going and finish the night. The promoters asked me to stay and play the next night as well.

Also, as the NASA Project we played a New Years Eve rave at the Denver Coliseum and that was pretty nutty. We were rolling around on the floor of the Denver Nuggets locker room completely out of our minds!

I also played a private after party for Depeche Mode here in Dallas a few years ago. Needless to say I enjoyed the hell of that!

Upcoming releases?

Robert Taylor and I have been working together under the Kold Comfort Farm moniker. We have an EP of bootlegs coming out for Mamas Home Cookiní label, and we've also done a "Clap Yo Feets' remix that will be coming out on Select Limited.

As Red Eye, I have done vocals for Q Burns, and Phil Weeks which is getting a huge buzz. I just started some work for Brett Johnson, Hipp-E, and DJ Disciple.

In the middle of all that, Paul Parades, Scott Pace and I are working on some electro rock type stuff. Thereís also a finished thing under the Glamour and Damage name, and Iím also working on the Lamar Latrelle project.

I like doing stuff under different names because it allows all of the different sides of me to come out and not have people react negatively to it because it might not be what they expect to hear.

What do you think of the current state of the Dallas scene?

Honestly, I don't know what to think about it. It's not a happy sort of feeling definitely. Sorry if that sounds negative, but I call it like I see it. Itís not the promoters fault though. Crews like Fresco, Molicious and Full Access all do outstanding jobs. And places like Zubar, Minc, and Shade are facilitating the shows. But venues and promoters can only do so much.

Everyone has become complacent, apathetic, and kind of lazy really. Everyone wants to bitch about stuff, but when someone tries to do something, those same bitchy people are no where to be found and donít support. If everyone that tried to make everyone think they're such champions for the scene really ACTED like champions of the scene things would be different. It seems like now people are more accustomed to going out and being disappointed. And then theyíre surprised to have a good time.

Also it seems like everyoneís lost their balls. There's so much great stuff with new sounds out there but this city seems so resistant to it whenever you try to stir the pot. But then everyone says theyíre bored with what they're hearing. It didn't used to be like that, everyone used to want the new styles. I'm really into the whole indie/rock/elecrto-tech/punk-funk dance thing. Itís blowing up everywhere except here. Thatís actually what the Kold Comfort Farm vibe and we are going to start a night to push that sound.

Is there anything you see other musicians doing that annoys you?

They have to be musicians? Just kidding.

But seriously, I hate seeing the masses get their way musically. Especially when what the masses want in my opinion is the worst music Iíve ever heard!

Mainstream music is choking this city and the idiots are storming the studios and getting played. I hate that this city has been over run with people that apparently only know ONE form of music and so many people that should be educating are just spoon feeding them what they want.

Meanwhile, that leaves people with more discriminating tastes left out in the cold. It sucks that you can walk down the street in this town and every single place is playing the same shit. If you donít give a fuck about radio music you're staying at home most nights. I know everyone doesn't have the same opportunities and free range to do whatever they want but I wish more djs would stand up against shit music and quit feeding the idiot mentality that is over running club land. I've been really lucky in the fact that I have always been given full artistic license to do whatever I want, and my theory is if you can go anywhere in this city and hear the same shit, why add to it? If thereís already 10 joints with the same sound, why be number 11? Play the stuff you believe in, especially if no one's playing it. Thatís how new vibes get started and scenes get rejuvinated.

Do you want to thank anyone?

Robert Taylor, Paul Paredes, Scott Pace, the staff of Minc, Chris and Shelly, Brooke H, Jeremy, Mike, Miles, Johnny Walker, JD, fresco, Shade, Mo, Demarkus, Brett Johnson, Phil Weeks, slater and Larner, Deep Dish, Gil Scott Heron, Ronin, Kelle Marie, Techno Tony, Jeff K., Luke Sardello, Granite and Funk, The Juan Maclean, DFA, soulwax, Core Records, Tiga, Supersystem, A1, Jim, Mystic Bill, Daddy J, club kids, drag queens, misfits and weirdos. *breathe* Jeff Steele, Michael Bruce, Sean Holland, JV, Apolesse, Rob Vaughan and anyone who thinks your name should be here for whatever reason.

Anything to add?

Oh, always. Half of this country is asleep, and decisions are being made on your behalf that arenít in your interest. Mostly because the powers that be are relying on the apathy of the public. Don't put your life in the hands of people who donít give a shit about you or your life or your well-being. Wake up and make some fucking noise before you donít have that option anymore.

And thank you Mike DuPreist. I owe you everything. R.I.P
