December Profile - Bryan Cox
December 2006 Profile:

Bryan Cox

By Juan Porrata

Happy Holidays everyone and let me introduce you to the bangin' funky house producer, Bryan Cox.

Bryan's 100+ tracks have been featured in magazines such as Entertainment Weekly, Mixmag and URB, Showtime's "Queer as Folk", as well as in mix cd's by top dj's such as DJ Dan, Joey Beltram, Donald Glaude, Richard "Humpty" Vission, Hatiras and more. He has also appeared on prime time radio broadcasts by Fergie on London's BBC Radio One and also New York's WKU. Bryan has done work for the industry's top labels such as Ultra, Subliminal, Fine Tune, IHR, and more. Remixing a wide variety of top artists, anywhere from Hertz to Ferry Corsten, has kept Bryan very busy when not traveling abroad.

Nearly every track Bryan's produced has reached #1 on the DanceRecords.com charts (Americas #1 and largest record store) as well as numerous #1's on Juno (The UK's Largest). Bryan had around 20 number one hits in 2005/6 alone. Being licensed to the "This is Techno" CD, which included tracks by Moby, Crystal Method, and Underworld, was a crowning moment for his "Music is Movin" track. While "The Smackdown", Bryan's radio show, was the most listened to radio show on the worldwide 1groove.com. It was broadcast alongside such other notables as Defected Records and Chris Leibing.

Here's just a sampling of what some of his peers in the industry are saying about our boy:

"Bryan Cox always rips it!!" -Joey Beltram

"Bryan's energy on this album once again represents the funky intensity that only Bryan can create through his dj'ing and production skills. This mix really makes you want to be in the center of a massive outdoor festival at peak hour. I recommend this album to anyone who honestly loves their music pumping and consistently funky! Excellent mix!" -DJ Dan

In addition, this peak time dj has launched a global tour promoting his new mixed artist album "Motive", slated to drop in March 2007. His high-energy shows have packed dance floors across Europe and Asia and one of his favorite experiences from the tour was headlining at one of Europe's largest music festivals, Dance Valley in Amsterdam. Bryan stated: "It was a wild festival that lasted for two days and I've never seen anything like the way these people party!"

His travels appear to continue as he has been booked to return to Dance Valley for 2007 to rock the house stage again. Furthermore, being one of a select few dj's invited to play in China, while standing on The Great Wall on the Asian leg of his tour made him realize how lucky he was to have such a great job.

With the first half of his tour shows spreading from the UK to Poland, Japan to Colombia, Bryan hits the U.S. briefly on the spring leg of his global tour before heading off to the European summer festivals in 2007. Lastly, Bryan Cox's new night in NYC "Weapon New York" or "WNY" promises to be one of the hottest showcases for the funky and bangin' side of house. He is being quickly dubbed the American pioneer of the new face of house music, and is trying to bring a refreshing new element to dance music.

Q & A:

You are very well versed in the vernacular of funky house. Tell me about your musical origins. Have you always produced and/or listened to banging house?

My first record was "Zaitech" in 2003. It was an electro/techno track on Bad Boy Bill's IHR. That record moved quite a few units and I started getting contacted by the techno label Bush, Donald Glaude's Eden, and Joey Beltram's STX. I flew up to New York to work with Joey Beltram because we both loved the bangin' sound. Then I started on a ton of tracks and remixes for various funky house and techno labels. I was always attracted to the funky peak time sound, so I really wanted to push that in my productions and dj sets. I went on to do production for Subliminal, Ultra, Antoine Clamaran's Fine Tune, System, Eden, and more.

Tell me about your forthcoming album slated for release in March. Any guest production or tracks you would like to discuss?

The album "Motive" is a mixed artist album. It is all my own production tracks and remix work. There's some hot new cuts on there as well as some classics mixed together to create a slamming soundtrack. There are a couple of collaborations between DJ Dan and I that are debuting on the album and disgustingly dirty and nasty. This album is the first in the "Motive" series, all which will feature a specific style of my production. When the album is released in March, I go on the second leg of the "Motive" tour, which will be heavily focused on US and Canada before going to Europe this summer for Dance Valley and more of the festivals over there.
