July Profile - DJ Offbeat

July Profile:

DJ Offbeat

By Kelle Marie

Who do you respect musically and why?

I respect honesty and passion. With that in mind, I would have to cite Osunlade as an unbelievable inspiration. I mean, here you have someone that, fairly early in their career, writes a song like "Rico Suave". He has every opportunity to sit back and cash in, writing forgettable songs for forgettable artists. But he just keeps digging deeper and deeper. Art over money, a choice too seldom made. Soul-baring and spiritual, it's everything that art is supposed to be and everything that music means to me.

Lee 'Scratch' Perry, Miles Davis ('Bitches Brew' is the foundation of everything I listen to), Kyoto Jazz Massive. 4 hero are an enormous influence, unbelievable artists, '2 Pages' changed my life!

What tunes / artists / labels would you recommend to someone unfamiliar with this style of music?

Yoruba Records, DeepaGrooves, and Masters At Work in the more house vein. More on the jazzy dancefloor tip, you still can't beat Schema or Compost. I think in 20 years time, we'll look back at the early Compost releases (circa 1997-2002) and finally realize how far ahead all those cats were and what they started, much in the way we look back at the Mizell Brothers or the hip hop and techno godfathers now. The early Compost artists and recordings are what inspired FutureHistoryOfHouse in name and sound.

Check my charts periodically, I never put up anything that you will be disappointed with if you like soulful, jazzy music of any style.

What has been your best experience as a dj?

Hmmm. That's hard. You never forget your first time playing out or your first residency, but I would have to say that my first gig in NYC. It's like I was separated from that city at birth. I felt at home immediately. You can't beat the way people in NYC support the music, support each other, and come to DANCE!! It's beautiful.

Upcoming Gigs?

July 7th @ Minc DJ Orly (Austin), Sona, and DJ Offbeat
Mr V - July 14th Zubar
Frankie Feliciano - August 5th Zubar

Keep your ears to the ground - I will be announcing monthlies in Austin and Houston very soon.

Anyone you would like to thank?

My amazing girlfriend Ali, who puts up with me going out flyering every night and throwing these parties, regardless of outcome. Ray at Zubar and Julie at Minc for being very supportive of my vision. My Pops for allowing me to skip out of work to run around town with some DJ from out of town every couple weeks. Super big thanks to everyone who has given so much love and supported my parties. My brothers from another mother - John Briggs / Zoetic in Detroit, Todd Wilson in Austin, Joe DiPadova in Arizona, Adam Gibbons in Sante Fe / Boston who continually provide inspiration and insight. The other DJs and promoters who have had me out to play at their spot. Everyone doing their thing to make Dallas a better place.

Anything to add?

Support the community!! Ask if you don't know, we're all still learning...
