October Profile - James Warren
October 2008 Profile:

James Warren

By Juandingo

Having been in the scene since fresh out of high school, this month's profile, James Warren, cut his teeth attending clubs such as the Tunnel and Area 51. From his early club going experiences he met friends that would last till today such as Juan / OneFm. While influenced as many others were at the time by the seminal Global Underground series (especially Digweed's Hong Kong compilation) James' style can best be described as an open interpretation of house and techno so long as it's groovy.

Soon after honing his skills, he eventually in 2001 began playing out at the now defunct Tunnel. His style at that time was primarily focused on the popular sounds of banging and deep techno rhythms. Shortly thereafter he also had a residency at the Rear Window and in between spent his time bartending around town and partying with friends. During the course of his outings he soon became part of the Studio 7 camp with the likes of Johnny Funk and Mr. Cooley and others. Their focus was primarily on their own warehouse events and various club nights. Incidentally, from these late night gigs his palette of taste expanded even further into the realm of progressive and tech house.

Some of his current accomplishments include his Altered Beats nights with his long time collaborator Jayson Gold. More of a techno tag team they have held it down at various spots around town including Nobu,Zubar, Minc and Eden. His most recent project is the Keep It Klean project with his long time buddy Juan / OneFm which promises to be chuggy and more importantly a fun night for its crowd.

James' defining trademark is that he has no particular allegiance to one type of sound. You are just as likely to find him at a house weekly as much as you can find him at a techno night. This is what first caught my eye about James. The simple fact is that he is a true connoisseur of various sounds and in doing so is able to accommodate these various aspects into his own personal dj style. James is truly a student of music as much as he is a participant which will definitely bode well for his success and longevity in the musical scene today and in the future. Coupled with the fact his current bartending at the Loft and Palladium only further expose him to even more divergent sounds, stayed tuned and listen to where his sound will eventually become. Also, be on the lookout for some new production efforts as well from our boy James and others.
