What are some of your current influences?
Lately, I'm listening to a lot of stuff like Millie Jackson, Betty Davis(Mile Davis' second wife) and Ohio Players. I also dig the Kings of Leon. Estelle's album earlier this year was great as was 'Welcome to Jamrock' by Damien Marley.
Describe your vision for the Masdelux parties.
We want to get back to grooving when we dj, instead of it being some 'performance'. We are focused on making that connection with our crowd. Smash the entire dull genre BS that we've all been guilty of in the past and just play what we like. Definitely, masdelux parties are all about that vibe, hip therapy for hippies and hipsters! It's cool because we do a show on myhouse-yourhouse.net twice a month (Sundays 4pm) that has been great in getting us back on that path and digging through records.
Any thanks?
Mel Brooks, Abe Lincoln, Stella (the brew), HDC, Hall and Oates, dj Snafu, the Collingwood’s, Fernando Balboa, Mr.& Mrs. Harlow, Saville Row, my legal team, Orange Gatorade, Paydays (the candy bar), free party people, OJ (con pulpa), Devon Proper, Jake & Lucy (The IT dept), Pal Joey, Bunny Boilers, Clark Kent, Dave (of course).
Any upcoming projects/releases?
Terry Sims and I have been doing the back room of Zubar Thursdays (Bonus Beats!) and consequently have been putting together tracks (mc's please hit us up-get involved). David Lewis and I recorded a track with Aaron B that is getting remixed by Kelle Marie (Aaron - please give us a ring, homie!). We're just trying to find and nurture all those creative things in life. Keep it pushin'.
Upcoming events:
Pop Rocks - Saturday February 14 – Zubar
Flock of Haircuts - Friday March 13 (location tba)
SXSW – March
What are some things about the London scene you think Dallas can incorporate as its own?
Man, the more people I see getting involved in promoting the music to people, and in a way that allows diversity to motivate those people to get up/get out/get down, the more hopeful I am that Dallas can have that 'smog-free scene'. It's nice that there are more promoters trying to push their nights, instead of just djs promoting themselves. Specifically, I think there needs to be more parties thrown outside of the usual club-hubs. More hype-free zones like what the Earth parties used to be. There has always been a ton of talented musical minds right here in north texas, and I'm regularly reminded of how lucky we are in big D.
