    Does your vote count?

In Texas, if my vote doesn't count and the GOP candidate has an automatic win then that means that only Republican votes count... what the hell is that all about? Maybe that's just the kind of bullshit they want you to believe so no one bothers voting for another candidate. Obviously Republicans don't sit around talking about how their vote doesn't matter or else their candidate wouldn't win.

There may be more Republican voters in Texas than Democratic voters, but that doesn't mean that if you want to vote Dem that you shouldn't go out and vote. Things can change, and if not everyone is going out and voting then we aren't getting a representative vote for this state.

Oh and people should stop voting along party lines. Just because you think you're Republican or Democrat doesn't mean you really are... and it doesn't mean that the candidate of that party is really what you think the party is all about... and who knows, maybe you're a Republican or Democrat but you actually disagree with the parties candidate on key issues and you may want to vote for the other candidate.

I just am sick of hearing people talking about how your vote doesn't count, because it does count. You have no business talking bad about Bush or about politics if you're not going to vote. If you're for the war or against the war, you can let your opinion be known in a way that actually matters by going and voting.

your vote gets counted, but democracy rules and democrats are simply outnumbered.

    simple enough concept to me.

However, by not voting it makes it appear that there is a much larger margin of Republicans vs Democrats in Texas which may demoralize even more Democrats from bothering to vote. For all you know, there may be a growing number of people dissatisfied enough with the Republican party to switch their vote. What if enough people convert to make Texas a swing state? We'll never know because there's too many people who just stick with, "Oh well, Texas is a red state and my vote doesn't count. Why waste the gas?"

I'm not suggesting that this is happening in the state right now but it is definately a good enough reason to hit the booth.

All of the points offered (as to WHY to vote) are pretty much valid.

Imagine if you say "It's not worth it" and don't go. Now add 1234567890 other people that let apathy affect their desire to vote.

Every single one of you that says "Not gonna do it" was a critical number towards toppling the Republican rule in state. Your vote determines the Electoral vote, so your vote does INDEED count, people.

The vote doesn't count in the sense that the electoral college system is an "all or nothing" system, so only the swing states matter. If you are in the minority party, there's no point.

That's exactly why states are starting to move towards selecting their delegates for the electoral college based upon the outcome of the national vote. It may be some time before Texas gets there, but your Dem vote in Texas may help get delegates in another state...

Additionally, even if your vote for the prez "won't count" there's still all the state and local elections. There's more Democrats in the state than you might think.
    This is my signature.

yeah... they do districts. its still basically a majority vote to the electoral. plus if a state leans to the majority its likely that the 2 senate electoral votes will stay on the majority.

so yeah... the minority may win a spare vote but its typically going to be a largely majority vote.

one thing most people dont get is that state elections are very important in determining the makeup of the electoral. i always laugh when a presidential election year rolls up and everyone bitches about the system yet not a single person i have ever encountered in person voted in their state election the two years before. since electorals are chosen by vote in primaries or by the state legislature your vote does matter... just in an indirect way.

its also highly possible that large states with enough gradual change (by the voting public) could turn into swing states. not likely with texas but it 'could' happen.

imo a proper beef would be the voting representation of large vs. small states. you could have the exact same turnout in say nebraska as in texas. one gets 5 votes... and one gets 34.

but the theory of the constitution article on the electorate is that the states vote the president. the people vote the congress. in essence your vote does count.
