Hey merritt,
I recently did the whole new comp thing for about 900 minus monitor and keyboard and mouse and such. I think pentium's are worth the extra cash but thats just my IMO. I went from a pent3 700 to a pent 4 1.6 gig and let me tell you its been the best experience ever. Finally im getting to finish up tracks that had me against the wall as far as cpu usage was concerned. Here is my new setup:
Soyo Dragon (I actually dont recommend these, They work great but it took me 2 days 24 hours a day to get it all setup ie. Fualty bios problems etc etc)
Seagate Barracuda (Looking at the specs its hard to tell the diffrence between this model and the current western digitals but the important part is you want prolly 7200 rpms and 8meg cache speed) Since the Western digitals and Seagate are about 10 dollars apart in price in comprable models then the Seagate tends to be more stable IMO.
Pentium 4 (Drool, need I say more) Only problem you might have with this is that pentium 4's can spike which translates to jumps in your cpu usage in intervals kinda like every second or soo. Nothing major and with most audio setups you never even experience any peril but they have a new plugin called blockfish that stabilizes the signal by sending dead air through the Bus channels and seems to fix the problem.
Hope this helps merrit,
