Except it's a pretty steep entry cost for a beginner. I think that Acid 4.0 (not Professional) is ~$70. Ableton Live 3.0 is $299 at best. Of course, Ableton does

Personally, I've heard some dope shit made on the crappiest of software, so its all a matter of using what you have until you find you need more. Too much stuff is confusing, especially when you first try production.
