right now nuclear counts as 20% of our nation's power and since nuclear plants have a certain shelf life and if you add on the fact that no new nuclear plants have been built for awhile... once those plants go through their term, if we don't have something to pick up the slack then we will see a sharp drop off in production. so the story in the NYT was basically saying that right now is the best time for power companies to build nuclear plants because people are more willing to forget about the previous accidents when faced with the fact that we will have a sharp drop off in production if we don't figure something out.
as far as wind and sun... unfortunately those aren't very viable options right now as far as money goes, just like dionysis said. i like the options where they work well though, it'd be nice in a perfect world to be able to support all of our power needs through natural means (wind, water, sun)
right now it appears as though there is no perfect option, i just think that i'd rather go with the nuclear option right now than go with the dirty coal option... and i refuse to listen to people talking about clean coal because i think that's all bullshit.
in the end though i cannot wait for scientists to figure out how to harness the power from nuclear fusion rather than fission though.
