When you vote in the primary, can't you only vote for 1 party? So if its more important for you to vote for republican senators, or governors, but you hate the presidential candidate, you vote for the guy that is going to drop out. I think that's right. Some people do it just for support. Some people have deals. I don't really know. In the end a vote for the guy that is going to lose is a vote against the guy that is going to win.
