| Is this guy from Dallas?
IF: Good techno is far and few between these days, THEN: thank goodness for Gerald Hanson. The man known more commonly as CONVEXTION has remained unwaveringly committed to the sounds of quality electronic music since his surfacing in the mid-1990’s. Hanson is a true artist; quietly operating in the shadows of isolation and obscurity, he’s remained in his hometown of Dallas, Texas, far away from the frenzied hype of dance music epicenters domestic and international whose oversaturated gaze Hanson has, for the most part, wisely circumvented. His approach is timeless, stoic, resilient: from his autonomous perch, he’s delivered countless productions whose sense of atmosphere, spatiality, tonal diversity and progressive movement stand in an elite class of techno producers whose sound can rightly be deemed “timeless.” Hanson’s honesty, his sincerity in the effort and careful attention to his craft, is only dwarfed by the ease that he creates music with a purpose, a totality that ebbs & flows throughout the progress of the track…yet it never fractures, reaches completion. The chords, their intricate filtering, their tumultuous, careful precision and sparse use, comprise the backbone of all his tracks, and with is S/T debut full-length, originally released in 2005 and now available on CD from Dope Jams, Hanson continues to perfect his sound. Not Miminal, yet minimal. Detroit & Berlin, yet without precedent. Moving, entrancing, and most importantly, unique.
