I take my dog to stores. He's a little guy though. I totally feel ya on this one .... I do not want to be barked at, licked, sniffed or jumped on.
On the flip side... I don't feel obligated to tell random people my dog's breed,his age, etc. And I totally hate it when people come up and touch him without even asking...
In general, I think people aren't considerate enough to think of others.
