i kind of went through the same thing. We wanted a really small wedding. There were only a few aspects that were important to me: my father walking me down the aisle, first dance with my husband, and dancing salsa all night long. But my mother-in-law wasn't having it. It "has to be done this way for it to be done right" . And then she started inviting a bunch of her friends that DIDN'T EVEN KNOW EITHER OF US.
Me and her argued back and forth for months. I gave in on SOME of her friends because she told me they were buying us big gifts...which they did.
it all turned out beautifully and for less than $4000 which his mom paid for most of it. i have no complaints
now i get to be a bridesmaid for miles' wedding and it's LESS STRESSFUL
