bottom line with letterman, he fucked up, because any time you mention others kids, they can always say, "don't talk about my kids" and somebody will say 'yeah, kids are off limits'.
it was obviously a joke, but at the same time he should have had the foresight to know that the right wing pundits were gonna spin this into something more than what it is.
