No the far right stuck w/Palin.. whatever the other (many) mistakes and terrible circumstances were.
McCain alienated the hard right over the previous 8 years... Palin ameliorated that... and offended the squishy center

McCain's biggest adversaries were a hugely unpopular incumbant of the same party and an economy on the brink not his selection of VP or previous bad behavior toward conservatives.
