| Frontline Report: U.S. Army may soon be fighting Muslim Rebels in the Phillipines
This Week: FRONTLINE/World, Thurs., June 5, at 9 p.m. on PBS (check
local listings).
A breaking news story from the Philippines about the Muslim rebels the U.S. army may soon be fighting
Joint U.S.-Philippine military exercises are set to begin this month in the southern Philippines, a region in which Muslim rebels have long battled the Philippine army. Is it part of the war on terrorism, or is
the United States getting involved in a Vietnam-style civil war?
FRONTLINE/World sent correspondent Orlando de Guzman and producer
Margarita Dragon to the battle zones to investigate.
We are very proud of their report -- an eye-opening look at a part of
the world and a bitter conflict unknown to most outsiders. Guzman
marches deep into the jungle and returns with an exclusive interview
with the military chief of the largest rebel army, the Moro Islamic
Liberation Front, who denies that the MILF is a terrorist group and
argues, "This is a local problem. ... U.S. forces should not be dragged
into this conflict ... ."
The striking images of combat in the tropics will remind many of you of
Vietnam, and there are some unforgettable moments, including scenes of
young children cheering as soldiers fire artillery guns.
