i think the sad part of that statement is the fact ANYONE could've replaced cliff - mostly because metallica's production on the first 4 albums was so guitar/drum-heavy they pushed the bass into the background that you can't even hear it except for small parts in some songs..aside from "anethesia" and "for whom the bell tolls" and some riffs on master of puppets he's lost in the mix - which is just shameful, straight shameful. i even read an interview with james back in '92 right after the black album came out talking about how they actually learned to mix in the bass guitar once bob rock showed them how...guess that flemming russamen cat didn't!
don't get me wrong, i was a huge metallica fan up 'til the black album...
garage days revisted e.p. (1987) truly is still the shit, and quintessential metallica to me!
