| I'd like to know where I can get some hard facts on this.
What can and can't you do when you're convicted of a felony after your sentence has been served? On the radio today I hear someone say that you can't own land if you're convicted of a felony. Not sure if I believe that but it perked my interest. Doesn't make much sense to me. I've also heard you can't leave the country. Now if you're on probation I can understand this. But what about after your sentence has been served? Again, if this is true it doesn't make much sense to me. Sooooooooo I want some answers. And I mean answers that can be backed up with proof. And I plan on double checking with an attorney about it as well. Because leaving the country and owning land are two things that I specifically would like to do in the near future. |

As far as what you heard on the radio about owning land, I believe they were referring to military personnel catching a felony case while in service and getting discharged dishonerably after serving their time. As far as the rest goes, I'd like to know as well. SFH |

okay well you have come to the right place my boy, have a seat: 1. you can be pardoned 5 years after termination of your probation. you must write the board of probation/parole and they will pardon you more than likely. you do not write the governor any more. if pardoned, you will regain all of your rights, and your slate will be wiped clean when pertaining to criminal background etc. though, im sure your arrest record will stay in tact until we all die. 2. yes, you can buy property. they don't have to give you a loan. 3. yes, you can leave the country, even on probation. anything else?!?!

I am unfamiliar with the procedure you describe but I am not surprised to hear it exists. Quote:
Depends... Permission to leave - leaving the country may require permission of a parole board or a probation agency. Permission to enter - if traveling to a nation requiring permission to enter (VISA) they're quite likely to want to do a criminal background check and may deny permission on this basis. And... Some felonies - not sure on the rules - will strip the right to vote from the felon.

As far as voting - I think some felons may be able to vote - as I recall some one on DDM pointed out a good example of a felon with the right to vote. I think it depends on the specific felony and the jurisdiction (Federal vs state).

Well, if you are no longer on probation or parole you wouldn't. I read the question to assume that there were impediments in place. If they do not exist then the question answers iteself.

Well, my question was what will I be able to do AFTER I'm off probation. I'm pretty sure I can't vote. But I want to do some travelling and I'm buying a home next year. As far as the home ownership goes, I think it would be strange for any lender to check criminal background. That doesn't seem like something that would affect my ability to pay back a loan. I mainly want to know if I'll be able to travel. I really, really want to. I'll be fucking pissed if I can't leave here. Also, to take it a step even further, I wonder how hard it would be for me to relenquish my citizenship and live in another country? Hmmmm..... |

Yeah, I'd think about moving to Canada if things got way homoerotic around here. Or if I had a few mill I'd move to Mexico and live in solitude for the rest of my life.

If your obligation to the state is comlpete it is complete. Do you think a felony might effect your ability to get a job? If you answered yes then a mortgage lender may want to know Quote:
If you're on probation or parole I think you're prolly goin to need permission to leave. Quote:
It is very easy to relenquish your citizenship. if you have your passport - just check out page "4" in the front or click me I think a bigger problem may be getting another country to accept you.
