The Abu Ghraib Prison Photos

semi disturbing pics

http://www.antiwar.com/news/?articleid=2444

C'mon guys, we cant be, or at least can't be caught doing shit like this. Its probably just one case being blown out of porportion. But our soldiers have to understand how delicate our image is, and things like this, even if it is only one case, damages it severly.

Its being investigated.

I pity the soldiers who are out there doing their job properly. Things like this will reflect just as much on them as the few soldiers that reportedly commited these heinous actions.

Re: The Abu Ghraib Prison Photos

did you LOOK at the pictures?

they're BOUND, heads covered, and put into compromising positions. how could it possibly be blown out of proportion when the proof is in the pictures? they're obviously pretty proud of the fact that they're humiliating these people. look at the big proud smiles on their faces.

that's some fucked up shit right there.

the few, the proud. THE US MILITARY!

what a bunch of fucking jackasses.

I'm not even going to comment, as nothing I could put into words would fully describe the feelings I have after seeing these.

I think the pictures speak well enough for themselves.

I'm only trying to give our military the benefit of the doubt, but I totally agree, not very many ways those pics could be takes out of context.

Just trying to point out my understaning that very few (I try to believe) of our soldiers act this way.

Sorry to sound a little pissed here, but what in the fuck is your problem? These are human beings. Regardless of whether people are 'caught' doing it or not, this SHOULD NOT BE HAPPENING.

Agreed. Of course it doesn't help that major media rarely reports on the jobs being done honorably.

???

Isn't that much of what we've heard the 1st part of the war -- about the bravery and courage of our troops, and what a good job they've been doing?

It's photos like these, plus the video of the tank running over that guy's car, plus reading things about how the Army's psychiatric division comes up with great ideas like blasting heavy metal music at people and prisoners that make me believe that screwed up shit happens on a not-too-rare basis over there.

I'd fully believe that if the soldiers over there were all acting with the sort of decency that they've been projected to in American media as a whole, those people might not hate us quite as much.

My sentiments exactly.

On another note though. If the administration wants to sway Iraqi public opinion they have a great chance here. Deal with these American soldiers harshly and make it public to the Iraqi people. There is no excuse for this type of behavior. Show them that the American people have no patience for these actions!

Invariably it's a small blurb before they start talking for 15 minutes about the car bombing or another soldier's death, etc. I think both sides can(and should) be represented, but news agencies spend an inordinate amount of time on the bad news. There are several stories I've read about that never even saw the light of day on the major media outlets, like the Army converting one of Saddam's northern palaces into a school for the town. I would like to see an equal amount of time given to the positives in Iraq. They don't talk about the 145 new newspapers that have been formed since Saddam's fall, they talk about the 1 spewing violent anti-American rhetoric. This leads me to my other point below.

You're talking about 3 events over the course of one year involving maybe a dozen or so soldiers out of 150,000+ soldiers. I don't pretend to imagine that these are the only bad apples over there, but I find it incredibly hard to believe that even a significant minority of the military is acting like this over there. To judge the entire military by the actions of these few would be like judging the entire dance music scene by reading about Rollinraver.

I don't pretend to judge the entire military by the actions of some obviously inhumane individuals.

However, I do believe that atrocities happen more frequently than the ones that happen to be caught on film. The rate at which I don't care to guess, but let's bring a Viet Nam parallel in here: it is widely documented the fucked up things some American soldiers did over there. Does that constitute a judgement on all? No. But those things will always be remembered, and if commanding officers still allow these sorts of things to happen, I take offense, and see an institution that is not working. The individuals by themselves are not the only ones to blame here. I would like to believe that those promoted as commanding officers would mitigate this sort of "grunt" behavior. But they're not. They're participating.

This is totally off subject but I'd just like to point out that the same thing goes for religion and its followers, including christianity.
