Father buries his wife and four daughters

Five members of an Israeli family - a pregnant mother and her four children - were killed Sunday afternoon in a Palestinian shooting attack on their vehicle while they were traveling on the road that leads to the Gaza Strip settlement bloc of Gush Katif.

The victims of the terror attack were identified as mother Tali Hatuel, 34, and her daughters Hila, 11, Hadar, 9, Roni, 7, and Merav, 2.

Tali Hatuel, a resident of the Katif settlement, was a social worker for the Gaza Coast Regional Council. She was eight months pregnant, Israel Radio reported.

The five were laid to rest Sunday evening in Ashkelon. Several thousand mourners, including President Moshe Katzav, attended the family's funeral in the southern Israeli town.

Standing over the shrouded bodies of his wife and daughters, David Hatuel asked for their forgiveness for spending time away from home lobbying against the plan to pull out from Gaza.

"On Friday [the girls] drew me a picture and wrote 'Daddy, we are proud of what you are doing for the home where we were born'," he said. "You were my flowers and I will not forget you," he said, sobbing.

Police said the Hatuels' white Citroen station wagon spun off the road after the initial shooting, then the attackers approached the vehicle and shot the occupants at close range.

An Israeli sniper positioned nearby killed one of the terrorists and troops called to the scene charged the second and shot him dead. Two Givati Brigade infantrymen suffered serious-to-moderate wounds during the exchange of fire.

Israeli tanks moved into the area following the attack, and army bulldozers reportedly destroyed a number of buildings near the road.
minister Gideon Ezra said the attack underscored the hopeless burden of staying in Gaza. "Our soldiers can't be in every car that moves in the Gaza Strip," he said.

"Thousands of soldiers are required to protect" the settlers, he said. "I would put our soldiers in other places."

Likud MK Yuval Steinitz said the attack did not make the disengagement plan any less necessary.

Likud MK Ehud Yatom said the killing of the Hatuels must enhance the fierce opposition to the plan to evacuate settlements from the Gaza Strip.

My sympathy to her family, she was an idiot - she drove an unescorted, unarmored, vehicle through what is effectively a war zone.

The settlements are a good portion of the problem for Israel, they should be removed asap.

Several hours after the attack, Israel sent in their Apaches and attacked the Palestine Tower in Gaza, which is a 14 story building, they fired 4 hellfire missiles into the top floor where Hamas had a radio station, and then a F-16 fired missiles at a car in Nablus with Al Aqsa Martyrs' Brigade terrorist enroute to Israel for a terrorist attack. Did I cheer? NO!

The settlements are a good portion of the problem for Israel, they should be removed asap.

Sharon was going to have them removed but his own party Likud rejected the idea yesterday after the terrorist attack.

They used hellfire missiles to minimize the casualties, when they could destroy the whole building which would be good for no one, and how many widowed, widowered, or orphaned? 4 were killed in Gaza then the 4 terrorist in the West Bank, if the Palestinian Authority would govern/police their people, then Israel wouldn't be going in Gaza or the West Bank after terroist, if Arafat wont take action to prevent terrorist attacks committed by his people then Israel will act decisively at the ones who plan finance and carry out these attacks.

Oh wait wait, I get it. That must explain why when Al-queda hit us on the mainland for 3,000 civilian casualties, we've returned the civilian bodycount by about 3x. Israel and US seem to see pretty eye-to-eye on counter-attacking. I guess it's about an eye for an eye, both ears, and the nose.

Its a cycle of violence and counter violence with no solution. Israelis/Palestinians claim the land as theirs, both claim Jerusalem as their capital, both claim the Temple Mount (Har Habyit*hebrew Haram al-Shariff*arabic) Neither side will concede, nor will they accept Jerusalem as a international city.
