He sort of sidestepped the issue, I guess. I don't really think he understood what Russ was asking him.

I think his position was that the public owns the airwaves, so they should have more input on what goes into public property. Other than that, I'm not really sure. I think if he understood what Russ was asking, he probably would have agreed that the community should set the standards.

Im sure this was regarding the issue w/ Howard Stern?

How do we know that Clear Channel didn't get thousands of phone calls denouncing his explicit dialogue?

I know that it all started with the J Jackson incident(when the american people obviously expressed their anger after the Super Bowl), but the people could have taken a stand on the Stern issue as well.

Has anyone heard if there was outrage from the public on the Stern issue?

Stern fans aren't happy about it, they blame Bush and Powel. How far does free speech go before its obscene? are there limits? and whos to say theres limits? the FCC? If people don't want to hear his show, then don't listen. Russ made the argument that cable tv is next.

Nader was also explaining some idea that if the major stations paid for some FCC license, then they could divert that money into making some "PBS" style public radio... he never said PBS, but that's what the explaination felt like. It's not that he doesn't have interesting ideas, it's just that he must be living in another dimension.

Or maybe he's just behind the whole FCC thing and wants to raise funds for that particular government acency.

I don't think that many people really care that much to be outraged at Stern.

I understood what he was saying there. His argument was that since the airwaves are public, broadcasters should be paying for the license to use public property. The fees for the licenses in turn should be used to fund public media outlets beyond NPR and PBS.

Beyond that, I think his position was that some FCC regulations were necessary.
