![]() | Anyone else find it ironic for Bush to dedicate a WWII Memorial?
...seeing as how the family fortune was built by grandaddy Prescott Bush's partnering with Nazis in financial and industrial ventures -- before, during, and well past WWII, until ~1951 -- I found his dedication of a memorial to people his family helped fund the deaths of a bit of a kick in the teeth. > Link < WWII veterans honored at memorial dedication Thousands gather on Washington's National Mall Saturday, May 29, 2004 Posted: 7:29 PM EDT (2329 GMT) WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Thousands of people gathered on Washington's National Mall on Saturday to pay tribute to the millions of Americans who served during World War II in the military and on the home front. More than 140, 000 people -- including thousands of veterans of the war --attended the dedication of the National World War II Memorial, capping a weekend of celebrations in Washington. In dedicating the memorial, President Bush described it as "open and expansive, like America; grand and enduring, like the achievements we honor." "Here in the company of the generation that won the war, I proudly accept the World War II Memorial on behalf of the people of the United States of America," Bush said. The memorial honors the 16 million Americans who served in the armed forces during World War II, the millions who helped the war effort at home and the 405,399 men and women killed in the fight against Germany, Italy and Japan. Noting that World War II marked a "hard, heroic and gallant time in the life of our country," Bush paid tribute to "the greatest generation" of Americans who when it mattered most "showed the finest qualities of our nation and of humanity." "To fight and win on two fronts, Americans had to work and save and ration and sacrifice as never before," Bush said. Bush spoke after actor Tom Hanks, who was influential in raising money to build the memorial. "Time demands that more than the fallen be remembered in this place of national honor," Hanks said. "Let us remember not just those that lost their lives in the war but all Americans who were alive, conscientious and who chose to serve as best they could in the years from 1941 to 1945." The president's father, former President George H.W. Bush, and former President Clinton also attended the ceremony. The elder Bush was a U.S. Navy pilot who flew carrier-based torpedo bombers in the Pacific. He was shot down by the Japanese on a mission in the South China Sea in 1944 and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. In a speech Saturday at the National Cathedral, he paid homage to World War II veterans, labeling them "one great generation of American patriots." He also praised the current generation of the U.S. military, saying their sacrifices were just as great. Former U.S. Sen. Bob Dole -- one of the key war veterans who pushed the privately funded project -- also took part in the ceremony and recounted his experiences during the war. The Kansas Republican and 1996 presidential nominee helped raise money for the $174 million project. Dole -- who was badly wounded in 1945 while leading an assault on a German machine gun nest in northern Italy's Po Valley -- used his political experience to shepherd legislation through Congress to construct the memorial. 'Here we mark the price of freedom' The 7.4-acre monument, which was authorized by Congress in 1993, opened to the public on April 29. "I didn't think I was going to live long enough to see it," former Navy radio operator Robert Collins said, admiring the monument from his wheelchair with his daughter and grandson. "I had a heart attack about a month ago, but I got here." The Department of Veterans Affairs estimates that 1,056 veterans of the war are dying each day. An arching Freedom Wall has 4,000 stars representing the 400,000 Americans who died in the war. On stone in front of the wall are the words, engraved in capital letters, "Here we mark the price of freedom." Two 43-foot tall arches stand at either end of the memorial, representing the Pacific and Atlantic war theaters. Fifty-six 17-foot granite pillars -- representing U.S. territories and states at the time and the District of Columbia -- encircle the Rainbow Pool and plaza. At night, lights mounted in the pillars glow.(Veteran: 'I am awestruck) Security was extremely tight for the event and more than 35 federal, state and local agencies have been involved in planning for the event, which began a year ago. Some 1,000 law enforcement officers were scheduled to be on hand, in addition to special support and response teams. The U.S. Park Police led the security effort. (Unprecedented security for event) On Wednesday, the Justice Department and the Department of Homeland Security warned that intelligence reports indicated that al Qaeda was possibly planning to attack the United States in the coming months. (Full story) Attorney General John Ashcroft listed the dedication ceremony as one of the events that could be an attractive target for terrorists. (Full story) |

After WWII? What, was the Bush family funding Odessa? Better yet, who didn't benefit from the Nazis?! I believe our whole American space program got a boost from a guy who tried to prove for hitler that the world was not round to discredit the old testiment... The same guy that built V1 and V2 rockets that bombed the fuck out of London... Also, the American IBM Corp. could be considered wholly responsible for the Nazi's determining who was jewish in Europe thanks to the tabulating machine, Norway for naval research and manufacturing, Sweden for selling vast natural resources to Germany, Switzerland for providing indirect financial investing markets for countries around the world wishing to do business with Germany. Many middle eastern countries supported the Nazis, some did business with them, others nations like Egypt helped to resist the British, India and Germany considered eachother brothers under the Aryan flag, The Wehrmacht Tiger Korp was comprised completely of Indians and defended Berlin to the death at the end of the war. There were even Indians who enlisted in the SS by the end of the war when they were finally allowed to. There were a number of British companies that hoped to broker peace with Germany in hopes of being the first to do business with the new german empire... Even Roosevelt denied european jews from seeking asylum in the US.... It was Canada that allowed them to seek asylum... If you want to blame somebody for collaborating with the Nazis, you might as well blame 75% of the planet...

I'm sure the Bush political dynasty will be looked back on in future times with much scrutiny, as hindsight many times reveals much. | |

If we're going to put all the conspiracy theories together, then we've got Bush the Nazi and Kerry the Bolshevik... So basically for 2004 for, we have the Hitler/Doenitz ticket vs. the Stalin/ Khrushchev ticket... Good lord... Anybody else here just really get tired of conspiracy theories? It's like eating endless McDonald's burgers.. they might be tasty at first, but I'm sure after the fifth or sixth one you are ready to puke your guts up...

There's only so much you can lay on Bush's head, and the actions of his parents & grandparents isn't one of them. He's done plenty that you can nail him for on his own.

Actually there's nothing wrong with it. Do you think that the Veteran's would have preffered to be short changed and had the memorial dedicated by the Vice pres? It's all about he honor of having the President dedicate it. I'm sure you know this though.

Is he a cold blooded mean person? I met the guy once when he was governor, seemed nice to me... My friend met him through his dad at the white house (before sept 11th). He said the guy seemed pretty nice and they talked a little about Dallas and how he was doing there... (my friend had just moved back to Texas from Bangledesh)... Is he the brightest guy in the world, certainly not... But I can't say I would attempt to slander his character, because I'm angry with how he is handling this country... I take it, you must mean his foreign policy is cold blooded and mean? eitherway, a bit of a Sarcasm fumble...
