![]() | Is paganism considered a form of religion?
Is it a religion, or just a historic relic of the past? Discuss.

I thought Paganism refered to the worshiping of religions no longer part of the mainstream of religions followed in the world.

pa·gan One who is not a Christian, Muslim, or Jew, especially a worshiper of a polytheistic religion. One who has no religion. A non-Christian. A hedonist. A Neo-Pagan. It has been adapted as a classification for certain, less mainstream faiths, Wicca being the more prevalent one.

Ah, ok.. so then it is a classification for other lessor religions? I brought this discussion up cause I heard something interesting the other day. The ACLU filed a lawsuit requiring the removal of a small Cross on the symbol for Los Angeles County. When the counsil reviewed the county symbol, they asked if the pagan symbol, I believe it was a profile of a goddess that is displayed in the middle of the symbol, be removed as well and the ACLU said that it was not necessary, just the cross should be removed. I was wondering if the goddess was actually considered a religious symbol of some sorts and if so why it wasn't being requested to be removed as well? Also, what is the ACLU's classification of religious symbolism? Is it just exclusive to Christian symbols? or have they gone after any other religious symbolism?

It's a collective term for religions. It's meaning varies depending on who you are asking. As far as the goddess question, I think in all fairness both should probably go. There might be room to suggest the goddess stays if it represents no particular religion, but just happens to be a nonspecific character. I don't know all the details behind it, so it's difficult to offer an objective opinion on the subject.

![]() | ![]() Ok, a couple of points: The definition of Paganism as "one who is not a Christian, Muslim, or Jew, especially a worshiper of a polytheistic religion." comes directly from the Catholic chuch, and was an attempt to lump all "heathens" together -- it's easier to hate them all equally that way. Pagan religions are varied, but do not by any means fill the scope of the definition given above. Get on Google. Do some research. |

That makes sense. I might look up more info on the goddess on their symbol. If it is a religious symbol and this lawsuit pans out regarding the cross... I think I'm going to setup a sign shop in LA specializing in LA County signs and get the ACLU to go after them again... lol

paganism is defined as a religion of the people. So it refers to any of the 'old beliefs' around before the romans or one not yet 'catagorzed'. What most people assume is paganism is acutally reference to wiccan or satanism.

not mainstream judeo-christian, muslim, hindu, buddhist = pagan specially if it was an archaic religion almost wiped out by the big 5 above. those wacky catholics always make it easier to spot the heretics.

Wiccan, however, is one of the 'types' of Paganism. It's a worship of natural majic, gods, & goddesses. | |
