Ironic how it took "less money" for a private enterprise to develop this, than it took our government...

How is that "ironic?" I would be shocked if the government could even come close the competing with private entrepreneurs on any venture.

They made it and they've landed the plane safely back in the Mojave.

Well in an ideal situation, and given the amount of years in space travel experience, one would think that they could have come up with something half way decent.....

What I'd really like to see is an audit of where all that money poured into the space program REALLY went.

But otherwise . This gets me a step closer to achieving one of my life goals (going into space)

In all fairness, there is an enormous difference between flying to the moon, setting up space stations, and landing a rover on Mars than there is getting an airplane right above the atmosphere for three minutes and them coming back down. I'm sure there is some waste in NASA just because it's funded by the government, but I have a few friends who work for NASA and JPL and they are brilliant people who work for less than I do. It takes an enormous amount of money, ingenuity, and hard work to accomplish what NASA has done, and they are generally one of the few government agencies that is under-funded.

Anyway, this does freakin' rock. One of my life's "to-do's" was to travel every continent and at least 150 countries before I die. Now, I want to see space too and these mofos could make it happen. They claim that it will take 10-15 years to make safe and "affordable" passenger trips into space a reality.

This is something that should have happened years ago, but I'm glad it is happening...

They didn't have privately-owned planes flying in space in the 50's.

Closest thing to a good, free video of the flight I can find, includes sister ship footage before the separation, then on-board camera footage of Spaceship One itself as it moves into outer space. (requires RealPlayer):

> Flight Video <

If anyone can find another video or a better one, please post it.
