Offbrand question, I saw your original post on this some time ago. How would one go about nominating Joel Chandler Harris ("Uncle Remus Stories") and Harriet Beecher Stowe ("Uncle Tom's Cabin")? To show the "darker" side of life as well, I think Frederick Douglass should be there as well (if he isn't already). People bringing about change and capturing the experience of the slave in a manner for ALL to see. A response would be cool or even a PM. Either or. Thanks. Interesting stuff to read.

![]() | Actually ...
Both Harriet Beecher Stowe (June 14 and July 1) and Joel Chandler Harris (December 8 and July 3) have been Jubilee Saints before. The reason for their exclusion in recent posts (July 1 and 3) is simply one of laziness; their respective contributions as abolitionist and folklorist have been honored by the Jubilee Calendar Committee. Since most saint days are chosen from either the date of birth, date of death, or some other date of extreme significance each nominee has at least two chances to be the listed saint on a particular day. Stowe, unfortunately, has the same b-day as Che Guevara. Therefore her saint day is often celebrated July 1st instead (although this year went to David Brower.) Harris' b-day is on the same day as Diego Rivera's, ergo his saint day is more often than not on July 3 (except this year, the saint was Charlotte Perkins Gilman.) The process is very disorganized, but due to this disorganization you end up learning a lot about folks you might have never heard of. The "official" calendar produced yearly by Autonomedia is usually chalk full of errors (especially for lunar based holidays,) and after playing with this calendar for almost a decade now, I've learned to double check my facts against other, more stringent data sets. If you're interested in nominating a Saint, I would strongly advise you to first get a calendar, make sure they aren't already nominated, and then use the following outline: (From the Mastering the Art of Jubilation Thread) Nomination For Sainthood & Inclusion In The World's Columbian Grand Jubilee Calendar Of Saints Please copy this form [or make your own] to offer any number of candidates you wish, and circulate additional copies to friends throughout the world. Note: Saints need not have lived in the last 500 years. They need not have any direct connection with the New World. Living persons may not qualify for sainthood. No popes or heads of state please. 1. Sponsor: (you may be anonymous if you prefer) Name: ______________________ Address: ___________________ City: ______________________ State: ___________________ Country: ___________________ Telephone: _______________ 2. Name of Candidate (groups will also be considered): 3. Proposed Feast Day: 4. Alternate Feast Day: 4a. Reason for Day: 5. Brief Argument for Inclusion: 6. Brief Biographical Sketch: 7. Suggested Symbols and Motifs for Artwork: Biographic references and supporting materials are very welcome. We especially seek portraiture and other graphic work, original or copies, in color or black and white. Documents, quotations or miscellaneous ephemera will all be very helpful. The decisions of the Committee for the Causes of Saints will be final only in the context of the first calendar, which is meant to be spiritually nourishing and inspirational, not authoritative or exhaustive.
