I understand your implications, but the fact that he would be captured would outweigh any political wrangling for me, at least initially. Something tells me that scenario isn't very likely, for a couple of reasons. First, if they knew where he was and could go get him I doubt they would let him go at this point. He's a higher value target than Saddam, and they only took about 2 hours(iirc) to move on him. Especially with someone as slippery as Osama, I don't think they would wait until an opportunity in October. Second, if they had already captured him I doubt they would keep it a secret until October. At this point, the political reward for capturing him wouldn't die off in 2 months. Even if they were able to capture and hold him, nobody would be able to keep it a secret. Between the loose lips in Pakistan's government - who would definitely be in on his capture in some form - and the numerous military sources that the US media has, I doubt they would be able to keep this on the dl for longer than a few days. They couldn't even keep the secret of the Al-Qaeda computer geek for more than 5 days.
What I fear about his capture is that Americans might think this is now over and get lax about the need to continue going after the rest of Al-Qaeda.
