Well, the more I think about it the more I suppose it makes sense from a PR position. I think it's a statement he had to make to avoid getting blamed outright for everything that has happened by claiming it's not his fault (once again) that everybody in Iraq didn't bow down to him (as the anti-war crowd predicted). The timing is key, although I think that is for a different reason. The reason to say it now is so that he is on record talking about it, but in a story before the convention so it will be covered up by position stories about himself and Republicans for the next couple of weeks and few will take notice of it. Not to mention, it was in the NYT which I doubt many of his supporters read, seeing as how it is "liberal elite media" and all.
