European space official suggests lunar DNA preservation in case of catastrophe

The Moon should become a genetic Noah's Ark for repopulating the Earth in case of catastrophe, suggests a European Space Agency (ESA) official.

Speaking with BBC Science correspondent Pallab Ghosh at the British Association Festival of Science in Devon, England, Bernard Foing has proposed that the Moon hold the DNA of all Earth's plant and animal species.

"If there were a catastrophic collision on Earth or a nuclear war you could place some samples of Earth's biosphere, including humans," Foing told Ghosh. "You could repopulate the Earth afterwards like a Noah's Ark."

Foing's proposal is more than just idle musing. He is the chief scientist of the ESA's Research and Scientific Support Department, project scientist for the Smart-1 mission and executive director of the International Lunar Exploration Working Group.

The idea of a genetic ark is already being pursued on Earth. For example, the UK's Frozen Ark aims to preserve genetic material from thousands of endangered animals.

Interesting proposal. So we build a popsicle commuity on the moon and then set it to pop them off and give them instructions on what to do and a way to get to home should Earth not endure the end-game?
