True true. I understand that. Which is why I'm not going to watch, and I flip the channel off of news the moment I notice that's what is coming on.

The thing is, this is brutal. Beheadings take place in Saudi Arabia on a regular basis, yes - but they don't saw the guys head off - it is a swift strike, off in one. And yes, that is the most horrible thing I've seen in my life and it certainly puts the Nick Berg one in perspective.

The world just seems to get more biblical everyday No wonder you never heard of any account of protest rallies in Rome, unless it was some army storming through...

when the nick berg beheading was first online, it was one of the top google entries, right up there w/ brittney spears its not so much a "mindset" as it is people trying to understand why this happens, and what exactly it entails, eg. what do people who do things like this look like,.. its sick as hell, no doubt, but people intentionally subject themselves to this shit all the time, it's a way of facing the reality of it all for some. all in all, g-d bless the families that are dealing with this loss.

I'm with Ryan on this one: why watch it? For those morbid curiosity seekers, you should have gotten your fill with the Nick Berg thing and learned from it. I still hear from people that they wish they could "unwatch" that video. And to hear that this one is more gruesome? What disturbs me is the people that know via that grapevine that the new video is worse, yet still watch it anyway. For those of you that "demand to know what's going on in the world": what's there to really know? The guy got beheaded, and from the sounds of it, pretty horribly. There's nothing more that you can glean from that video than that. The very truth of the matter is: for each of you that watches this video, these terrorists have done exactly what they set out to do: shock the hell out of people, sicken them, and enrage them. It takes confronting common people with uncommonly horrifying situations and atrocities to elicit action. Think about it: what do these people have to lose? Many of these people have accepted their 'walking martyr' status, so they're not worried about being caught and/or killed. Besides that, many of these don't have a country anymore, and I'm sure we've all heard about the tensions (to put it nicely) between the US troops and the populus. So what does someone in that sort of position do? They go out and make the biggest statement they possibly can, and affect as many people as possible by doing so. I can guarantee it was absolutely no accident that the video hit the internet and the press as quickly as it did. My take on the situation: I believe that these grisly, broadcast beheadings are an affront to humanity, and I'm saddened by the fact that any person in this world would be subject to enough outside pressure and hatred for others to do such a thing. I feel for the families of those beheaded, because every time they turn on the news or pick up a paper for at least the next few weeks, they're going to be reminded over and over again of the suffering their loved ones were subjected to at the time of their death. I have sympathy for the powerless other families pleading for the lives of the others captive and still alive, because their respective governments "don't negotiate with terrorists". It's a sad state of affairs all around. |
