does anything ever really productive come out of the debates? Does it really have a sway in the voters decision

Absolutely. It's the only time you get to see these guys discussing issues instead of hugging babies. Plus, when they're face-to-face, they don't have their speech writers telling them what to say. They can sometimes have an enormous effect on the election. Just look at the debates between Nixon and Kennedy, or Reagan against Carter.

It is going to be interesting to see if Kerry can define his position on the Iraq war. I think if he can effectively clarify his votes, he will make big gains. If Bush can keep up with the ridicule and painting him indecisice, it's over.

These guys are both masters of debate in very different ways. Don't let Bush's simplicity fool you - it's his best weapon in these face-to-face confrontations. And Kerry is a master of "Senate-style" debate. He could easily beat Bush on "points," in my opinion, but this is not a collegiate competition, it's a presidential debate. Bush has the edge in style for sure, but Kerry has a lot more to gain and at this point, a lot less to lose. I can't wait.

werent all the questions in the 2000 debates scripted allowing either side to come up with choreographed answers beforehand? I could be wrong, but I thought I remembered that. something about bush wouldnt do it unless they knew the questions beforehand.

Kerry will spend the first two debates arguing with himself.

Bush will be resting at his ranch.
