A matter of integrity?

Solomon amendment was overturned

The law was introduced in 1994 by Rep. Gerald Solomon R-N.Y., who died in October 2001. He argued before the House of Representatives that Department of Defense funds should be withheld from schools that barred recruiters because "recruiting is the key to our all-volunteer military" and that the "starry-eyed idealism" of colleges and universities "comes with a price."

While it seems a matter of noble principle that schools, like NYU, would ban military recruiters from being on campus over issues, such as gays in the military, etc., would there not be a lack of integrity on the part of these schools, if they receive defense department funding of which they are protesting?

I would say the lack of integrity comes from taking the money in the first place.

hahaha

Yet your ability to post on, never-the-less conceive of dallasdancemusic.com comes from a DoD funded project the likes of which you vilify. Just thought that was ironic.

You are correct in that, but the DoD cannot put pressure on me to conduct myself in a certain way because I use something which was partially funded by it. When a college or university recieves that type of funding it is much easier for them to apply that type of pressure.

That's true.

But I don't have a problem with government funding of scientific discovery. I do have a problem with it being used solely for military purposes.

I think the military should be able to recruit in all colleges, work environments, technical schools, high schools. Not just the poor cities or counties throughout the U.S.

well, technically, that was arpanet (yes, the technology is one in the same), which was handed over to the NSF and later coined internet...

So, while it sprang up as a DoD project and I thank them for their endeavors, the initial intention of the project was to create an unstoppable communications network, even after the event of a global nuclear war. It's obvious, they succeeded in reaching their goal.

It's kind of like saying I hate bigots and everything they stand for, but I love my mustang, even though Henry Ford conceived of the assembly line, which brought us mass produced automobiles.

The world is quirky that way, but I understand what you are suggesting.
