Rolling Stone refuses to run ad for Bible - Dallas Dance Music - Dallas nightlife, music, tickets, and more

GRAND RAPIDS, Michigan (AP) -- -- Rolling Stone magazine declined to run an advertisement for a new translation of the Bible aimed at young people, the nation's largest Bible publisher said Wednesday.

Zondervan, a division of HarperCollins Publishers, bought space in the magazine months ago as part of an ad campaign for Today's New International Version, said Doug Lockhart, Zondervan's executive vice president of marketing.

"Last week, we were surprised and certainly disappointed that Rolling Stone had changed their mind and rejected our ad," he said.

A telephone message seeking comment was left Wednesday at the New York headquarters of Wenner Media LLC, publisher of Rolling Stone.

Lockhart said Zondervan, based in Grand Rapids, paid Wenner Media last July to run the ad in February, when the Bible is due on bookshelves.

On Tuesday, USA Today quoted Kent Brownridge, general manager of Wenner Media, as saying his staff first saw the ad copy last week, and "we are not in the business of publishing advertising for religious messages."

Lockhart said the ad features the face of a contemplative-looking young man and includes this copy:

"In a world of almost endless media noise and political spin, you wonder where you can find real truth. Well, now there's a source that's accurate, clear and reliable. It's the TNIV -- Today's New International Version of the Bible. It's written in today's language, for today's times -- and it makes more sense than ever."

Media outlets that agreed to carry the ad include Modern Bride, The Onion, MTV.com and AOL, Lockhart said. AOL, like CNN.com, is a unit of Time Warner.

God does not exist, god in the in sense of the word is something that we are told we are suppost to believe in that we are suppost to have faith in that one day will will be reunited with when we pass. Its kinda the same way we "as in our soceity", we teach our kids to believe on stuff that doesn't exist , the tooth fairy , santa clause.

In the sense of the word "heaven & hell" both here on earth, or what catholics like to call "purgatory" you cannot pick which one your life will be.

Religon in the sense of the word , guides a person while they are here on earth not to get them into heaven.

What exactly does declining advertising dollars from purveyors of an obviously incompatible product have to do with editorial integrity? If anything it shows that the publishers of Rolling Stone won't cave in to a blatant ploy to incite outrage by confusing the rejection of bad marketing with religous persecution. Do condomn manufacturers and bong makers waste their money advertising in fundamentalist publications?

As I said... refusing the ad for a bible would certainly besmirch their integrity...

Its no calamitous issue trans.. I could care less. I find it a bit amusing that RS wouldn't dream of publishing an ad for the bible at the risk of offending peddlers of drug parapherniala and sex aids... you don't think that's funny?

If they had to resort to that for revenue, yeah, I'd probably think that. But thats obviously not the case, so its irrelevant.

I was the one who brought up sex aids and paraphernalia, not RS. But, seriously, don't you think the bible salesmen were misjudging their market a bit? Their ad dollars would probably be better spent elsewhere. I think this was more about getting some free publicity by getting their ad rejected by RS, then complaining about to the religous press.
