![]() | A Question for You All
Pardon me if this has already been asked, but I have not been browsing the forums much at all as of late. In any event, can any of you on either side of the Terri Schiavo issue honestly say that you would want to be kept alive if you were in her condition? Let this be a declaration to the world, I NEVER want to be kept alive in that situation. |

i would want to die. my grandmother suffered from alzheimers disease, and i saw what she went through towards the end of her life. she could not do anything. she did not talk, nor did she give you any indication that you were there. it was sad. esp. since i remember how full of life and love she was before things got that bad. i know she did not want to go on living given the condition she was in. |

Let see, my choices are......... a.) Dying with some shred of dignity .......... or b.) being a lifeless shell, pissing/shitting myself on a daily basis. Relying on liquids dripped into my system to sustain me, being a constant burden and reminder to my friends and family of what I once was and will never be again. A weight that is keeping my family in a constant state of grieving. Hmm, i dont know man, thats a tough choice.

its funny because no one really knows what they would want until they are in that situation. There has been situations where people have been in car accidents and lose all their limbs, are burnt, disfigured, and are still consience to scream out for help. Why instead arent they screaming out for death if they are no longer able to function like a "normal" human being? Because no matter what, life is so precious even a person who falls from a rocky mountain begs to live because there is more to life than being able to drive a car or play nintendo and things of that sort. Those who arent able to make the choice to live or die are in the mercy of those who love them and must trust in those to make the right choice for them. She isnt terminally ill, and is relying on the technology built to sustain life. Why else was this technology invented but for such a reason. She is alive for some reason, and the mere fact that some people are calling this feeding tube removal a Dignified way of dying are transparent. It isnt peaceful, she is suffering and dying a slow and cruel death, while somebody who holds her fate in their hands is eating a nice steak and enjoying their life with their family. Maybe there is a fate worse than death and who knows maybe she would be lucky to pass from a place so cold as this, but nobody knows what they would do in that situation,...we could all say we would rather die than to be in such a state,...but i believe thats speaking out prematurely,.... |

My dad was in a similar situation. I saw what he was like when he was dying. He couldn't eat, speak, or open his eyes. He was taken off life support around Christmas, had a DNR and died peacefully in our home. I'd rather go like that than hooked up to a bunch of machines in a hospital.
