AP - 1 hour, 1 minute ago WASHINGTON - U.S. military officials say no guard at the Guantanamo Bay prison for terror suspects flushed a detainee's Quran down the toilet, but they disclosed that a Muslim holy book was splashed with urine. In other newly disclosed incidents, a detainee's Quran was deliberately kicked and another's was stepped on. On March 25, a detainee complained to guards that "urine came through an air vent" and splashed on him and his Quran. A guard admitted he was at fault, but a report released Friday evening offering new details about Quran mishandling incidents did not make clear whether the guard intended the result.

In the March incident, as described in the report, the guard had left his observation post to go outside to urinate. The wind blew his urine through an air vent into the cell block. The guard's supervisor reprimanded him and assigned him to gate guard duty, where he had no contact with detainees, for the rest of his assignment at Guantanamo Bay.

This is all the proof we need to confirm bush's war against Islam.

Come on, who gives a fuck. Where does the Muslim world, namely Saudi Arabia, get off reprimanding the US for the some 5 confirmed reports of Quran desecration when they're lobbing the heads off of Christians there? Moreover, have you seen how the facilities in Guantanimo accommodate Muslims, there are little arrows pointing to Mecca on the ground so the prisoners know where they can pray to. I highly doubt you'd find the same kind of accommodations for Christian prisoners in Saudi Arabia...And if anyone listened to Challabi he confirmed the newsweek article had very little if anything to do with the riots in Afghanistan.

I'm sure that makes the prisoners feel better while they are being tortured.

I doubt it does, I'm not defending what happens to people in Guantanimo. But religious persecution isn't among the list of offenses.

i would much rather be a pow in an american prison then any other.

prison isn't supposed to be fun. but i do think it is time to send these people back to their familes or give them a fair trial. not just hold them in cuba.

And while I agree with zerojunkie about the treatment of Christians over there, I still don't think we have any right to resort to "an eye for an eye" tactics with prisoners. I realize that this is idealistic, but the whole concept of Christianity is to love your enemy. The irony of this whole situation is overwhelming. The only way for all this to come to a head is for us to lead by example and permanently remove the ignorant meat-heads that act this way in the middle of war from not only the prison facilities but the military as well. You've already detained the bad guys, so why piss on them? It makes me sick.

Of course we don't have the right. But if you take the worst case scenario here, which is the guard purposely pissed on this guy and his Quran. It's still leaps and bounds better than lobbing their heads off, solely for their religious beliefs at that. What makes me sick though is that prisoners have died there, that's something I can't support.

Contrast the 5 cases of Koran mishandling out of tens of thousands of detainees, to the 15 cases in which the Koran was abused by the detainees themselves. It seems that Newsweek got their story wrong.

From the AP:

[Hood] said his investigation found 15 cases of detainees mishandling their own Qurans. "These included using a Quran as a pillow, ripping pages out of the Quran, attempting to flush a Quran down the toilet and urinating on the Quran," Hood's report said. It offered no possible explanation for those alleged abuses.

In the most recent of those 15 cases, a detainee on Feb. 18, 2005, allegedly ripped up his Quran and handed it to a guard, stating that he had given up on being a Muslim. Several of the guards witnessed this, Hood reported.

Also, I'm amazed at the wording of your post. The soldier didn't piss on the Koran. The soldier pissed on the ground next to the building. Small amounts of urine leaked through the vent onto both the Koran and the detainee. It's not as if a jailor intentionally pissed on the Koran.

The reports are far from what the MSM would have you believe.
