I'm sure France will be first in line to offer help in Francs, rescue/aid workers and their Navy

Since our GDP is probably 100 times the combined GDP of all countries affected by the tsunami, our medical infrastructure is 1,000 times greater, and the dealth toll is about a fraction of a percent of what it was in Asia, I doubt we will see the kind of outpouring we saw for the tsunami victims. I knew it was only a matter of time before this tragedy would be used to show contempt for our foreign neighbors, though.

Anyway, we're America and we don't need the world's help. We can and will take care of our own just like we always do. So stop whining and get out your checkbooks.

Ryan ... we don't need a Hurricane to justify our contempt for France. I wasn't whining, nor do I suspect Ed was. I was bashing France. Ed, I suspect, was making the point that we're blamed for not doing enough regardless of how much we do.

But, in more important matters - do you have information or a good general hotline website etc where we can send donations? I'm sure most of us here would appreciate knowing where we can send donations.

from what has been said they have 54 confirmed deaths at least around lunch today. the water system has been contaminated and they are expecting anywhere in the thousands of deaths due to the water supply being none. I am kind of curious as to whether the us will call for help of others. i dont think we really need it though

I don't think anyone else can offer the kind, quality or speed of service that we could offer... Ryan's logistical and economic analysis is balls on..... short version - we can help ourselves better by denying the help of those who offer (probably)

THANK YOU. i'm down to totally help, i'm just pointing out that we are the first in line to help any country in need. i merely used the tsunami as an example. our country has a long history of giving in times like these and we are constantly labeled as aggressive war-mongers pushing countries around. last night the governor of louisiana was asked the same question and she said NO. other governors had offered aid, but no other country has asked us if we need help.

p.s. FUCK FRANCE!

On reason you aren't seeing help offered is it's much too early. We are going to need help in the aftermath more than anything. The rebuilding/cleaning effort is gonna demand much more manpower. The logistics in moving around in those areas, especially New Orleans, is overwhelming.

Like Xian said, right now, the help would just get in the way.

we are the most generous society in the world Ed - I'm okay knowing and I shrug off the barking of other nations who claim we do too little...

btw we have a saying in our family about the french... goes like this... Chuck: Well, you know what we say about the French don't you? Xian: well yes, but I enjoy hearing it anyway Chuck: Fuck the French

They already helped us out by building the city of New Orleans below sea level! I'm just kidding. Don't get all up in arms.

The world doesn't help us because we don't need the help. Why would we expect countries who can't feed their own people (or at least keep them employed, in the case of Europe) to send us, the most fortunate people in the history of the World, assistance in a time like this? That would be like Bill Gates expecting charity from the middle class and the poor because one of his mansions burned down. We will fix this problem ourselves and will end up better for it - period. The rest of the world can stay home and fix their own problems because God knows, they have plenty.

p.s. - BLESS FRANCE!

many countries have offered to help in the past as well and the US declines.. sure we don't "need" their help but we DO need the help... if you think other countries don't help, look at the millions and millions other countries donated to us after 9-11
