| THESE ARE AMERICAN CITIZENS, NOT REFUGEES
This statement really angered me. It was made by either the mayor or govenor of Detroit, a black woman. She states that calling these people refugees is wrong and that we should be ashamed of ourselves for calling them that when they're truly American citizens. Refugee: One who flees in search of refuge, as in times of war, political oppression, or religious persecution. ?????????????????????????????????? The black community is very up in arms right now........ I'm having a hard time understanding their grounds for being upset. |

i dont understand that statement either. they're fleeing from natural disaster. i dont see the correlation to the black community in specific. sure, there are a lot of black people without anywhere to go, but there are white and asian people i'm sure in there too. we're all in this together. |

to make this attrocious to the black community really upsets me. I mean how can a national tragedy turn racial. Sure, alot of the pictures show black people and I'm sure that some of the hard hit areas were low income minority residences. But, then again if this is such a big deal for the african american community and not just the nation, where is Jesse Jackson, or Reverand Shapiro? This thread needs to be moved into Politics and awareness, as do several others that dont really pertain to how to help Hurricane victims. I realized that I started to spin a thread or two into complaining about this and that when it should have never lost focus on how to help these people..... Trey |

The issue that msot are getting upset about is the fact that most wwith money were able to leave before the storm. Those that are still in the city are poverty stricken and had no means to evacuate the city. The blacks are upset that the government made no preperations to assist the poor in leaving the city because they were to busy escorting the wealthy and their own families out leaving the weakest people with the fewest resources to fend for themselves. ^^^which makes me more upset about FEMA's response. they should have had trucks and buses getting people out of there days before the storm hit. sure, the people could have left on thier own accord. those that couldn't, should have been helped by the feds to get them out of there if feds felt the storm would have been that bad, which they did. let this be a lesson learned after it's all said and done. |

There supposedly was an article written in Popular Mechanics on September 11th 2001, that talked about NOLA and the Levies needing more support and more money, and the problem that could arrise being devastating like what has happened recently. I havent looked this up to confirm it, but it was on a news radio station, even though I'm still unsure how a reliable of source that is. But, wierd coincidence, no?

Sail: There was a project to reenforce the levies, but Bush cut back on it by 30 million dollars... so they had to put a hold on the project. But, they always knew NOLA was a disaster waiting to happen. Everyone there knew it was coming, they just didn't know when. They say even if the levies had been fixed and what not, that this still couldn't have been avoided though. Who knows. Speculating now isn't a good idea, we'll get a shit load of it after the water receeds. I wish they'd quit speculating and coming up with conspiracy stories, and focus on those damned people. | |

I'm not sure that is the problem.... The problem is when people tell you to get out... GET the F**K out. Most people have bikes, cars, and legs -- don't they? and just a thought.... don't shoot people trying to help!!

Yes, it would be very hard w/o a doubt. But for the sake of my family, I would have gotten out some how. I would have thrown my daughter in the car and drove until I didn't have gas and then walked. You do what you have to do for survival.
