NCAA accuses Texas universities of Athletic Looting

8:28 A.M. - (AP): Division I football, basketball and hockey players from schools closed by Hurricane Katrina must still sit out of the sport for one year if they transfer.



Some of those student players have ended up at schools in Texas.



NCAA president Miles Brand says the decision was made because the members of some teams, including at least one from Tulane, planned to transfer -together- to one school.



Brand calls that "athletic looting."



In other sports, Division I athletes can transfer and play immediately at another Division I school if they receive a release from the original university.



The NCAA has eased other rules, including those barring athletes from taking financial assistance from outside sources, and those that require students to be enrolled full-time.

This is the same entity that tried to bar the Florida State Seminoles from using the 'Seminoles' name even though the university has the full support of the Seminole tribe. They're the same ones that wouldn't let Jeremy Bloom get paid for advertisements from his Olympic skiing because he played football at Colorado. They're the same ones that gave SMU the death penalty but let Oklahoma & Nebraska recruit rapists & murderers. In short, the NCAA is a collection of idiots.

Besides, they let the Baylor basketball players transfer without penalty after the whole Dennehy/Bliss scandal, so why not after a hurricane shuts down their university?

The differnece is that some 'groups' of players are wanting to go to the same school. It's not that NCAA is not letting them leave without penalty just cause they want to leave. They are trying to curb the basically free recruiting that Texas is getting by having a natural disaster in it's bordering state.

It's also vastly different than the Baylor deal cause you are just talking about 10-12 guys that are going to leave cause they didn't know if the NCAA was even going to allow Baylor to play the next year.

Here you have whole athletic programs that don't necessarily need replacing, but if you are a student athlete you want to play... not sit around, wait and wonder when your school is even going to open up again

So the kids are supposed to be penalized by using up eligibility on their scholarships at a school that isn't operational instead of at least getting to a functioning university?

Besides, we're talking about Tulane here. This isn't like they're letting the starting defense of the Hurricanes go waltzing over to Penn State en masse.

But that's not the point. Yes the kids will lose out. But that is the only option between

A) Not allowing anybody to leave

or

B) Not controlling the free movement of powerhouse schools in a bordering state in regards to just picking up whatever players they can no matter what the state of the athletic program.

Basically it all comes down to are all the NCAA schools getting the same availability to these players... and you will prob find that they aren't. Half cause some of these kids don't want to be too far from home because of this type of event... but that still doesn't change the fact that Texas schools are getting free pick of the litter while others are getting left out.

It just seems to me that the only option is to have them sit out a year without affecting elligibility. And in the event of a disaster like this I'm sure they (NCAA) will find ways to give these affected kids the year they missed out on once they are relocated.

good thing the NCAA is initiating rules like this or Texas would be whipping up city leveling hurricanes everytime it had recruiting problems...

It's a bit differnent when most of the big texas schools are within 3-4 hours from the area affected. Plus most kids at these schools would prob jump at the chance to get into a elite level program... it's just that other big time programs apparently aren't getting thier fair shot at the players... I don't see what the big deal with the ruling is.

There's a third option: make a one-time exception. They did it for Baylor, let the kids from Tulane do the same. The NCAA didn't do anything to stop the kids from Baylor from transferring wherever they wanted. The only substantive difference is the amount of kids involved, since a basketball team has 11 kids on the roster while a D-1A football team has 50+ on scholarship. This won't happen though, the NCAA has a long-standing tradition of doing exactly the opposite of what makes sense.

Wow....at last, athletes will just have to earn their way through college instead of getting a walkthrough degree in communications. Who knows? One year away from the game and they might even learn to read and write.
