If we stopped treating global warming like a myth we could very well be seeing a different storm season.

Bullshit Keith

Global warming isn't a myth (it is true and its a function of human activity) - nor is it responsible for Kartina and Rita

just one of many articles on the issue - http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/9417904/

The biggest problem the Global Warming advocates ran into was in hyperbole. Claims that failing to sign Kyoto caused Katrina are exactly why so many dig their feet in and call it a myth.... if they were a little less eager to say that the sky is falling every time there's a heat wave, cold snap, el nino, tornado etc etc etc etc perhaps they'd be takem more seriously.... it is a serious issue... but the reporting on it is piss poor and filled with doomspeaking alarmists ... end rant... sorry - wasn't directing that at you personally or calling you an alarmist...

I didn't say failing to sign the Kyoto treaty brought about Katrina. The oceans are warming->fact
warm water is a recipe for hurricanes->fact
The gulf is polluted and by far one of the most polluted bodies of water. It can't even sustain life in its dead zones->fact

No doubt we're going to see natural disasters and the like regardless, but I'm sure our enviromental policies aren't helping. You should see the crap surfrider has been fighting right here in Texas.

I know you didn't say that - apologies for not being clearer....

Absent the rant I meant to say global warming is real but its effects are too often cited as the cause of every conceivable weather anomoly or nasty event (though oddly never for abnormally good weather - go figure) under the sun... that quickness to blame global warming discredits the theory in the eyes of many....

Considering it was built after what would now be categorized a Category 3 storm and the surge is expected to signifigantly top 17 feet, I can see it doing quite a bit.

All water aside, the winds alone are disaster. 150+mph sustained.

And it's not even to the halfway point of the Gulf (where water gets even warmer). It's got 2 more days to gain even more strength.

Lets hope you're right. The islands are going to take a fucking beating.

I'm wondering if they've gotten all the animals out at the aquarium, rainforest etc. down there.

Hey Bubu is bootleg
While our aid in global warming doesn't help the weather at all, the current weather anomalies we are seeing is a natural phenomenon as we see the earth shift. I'll check my sources but I believe is every 25 thousand years the axis of the earth changes and thus the weather is affected, and we are due a shift. If I remember right it was newscientist.com that had a whole article on this.

I remember seeing something on Nova about how every thousands of years or so the maganetic poles will switch. And they did say we are due for one.
