Max Mayfield told a congressional panel that he believes the Atlantic Ocean is in a cycle of increased hurricane activity that parallels an increase that started in the 1940s and ended in the 1960s.

The ensuing lull lasted until 1995, then “it’s like somebody threw a switch,” Mayfield said. The number and power of hurricanes increased dramatically.

Under questioning by members of the Senate Commerce subcommittee on disaster prevention and prediction, he shrugged off the notion that global warming played a role, saying instead it was a natural cycle in the Atlantic Ocean that fluctuates every 25 to 40 years.

I'll have to look it up, but there was a website with a bunch of NASA findings showing the increase of natural phenomenon in our planet as well as other planets in our galaxy. Some pretty cool stuff.

lol - but you were talking about a cycle that shift in 10k year patterns... not 25-40 year....

and yes, the planet does has magnetic shifts periodically - demonstrated by alternating polarity of the rock beads as they spread outward from the Mid Altantic Ridge


As for NASA noticing increases.... how long have they been monitoring the phenomena such that they undertand it is not part of natural cycle?

no their theories are not mutually exclusive if you look deeper....

the oceans cyclical patterns are fine and they give a nod to that explaination, but they also note that this study is not meant to explain any increase in the number of hurricanes, only an increase in intensity, which is not explained by the ocean cycle arguement.

so an increase in intensity due to an increase in ocean temperatures which is probably due to global warming is paired with an increase in the number of hurricanes due to ocean cycles = really not fucking good at all.

Global warmingh cannot explain the hurricanes without the cyclical theory. So, while global warming may play a contributory role - then again it may not... global warming cannot be argued to be the controlling or determinative factor. The cyclical nature is - but it may impacted by global warming. That may provide some agreement even if not complete agreement.

In short: The cycle runs separate of man's intervention (pollutants and what not) and we are bound to get hosed sooner than later.
