| a Denton Peace-In thought i'd spread this along... never been to one of these things and not sure i'll go to this one but this arrived in my email today 100 % Homegrown Goodness – A Denton Peace-In The 2nd Annual Peace-In Denton features former CIA analyst Ray McGovern and National Peace Action President Kevin Martin as headliners of the roster of speakers focused on issues of peace and justice Oct. 14-16. McGovern kicks off the 3-day event with Speaking Truth to Power at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 14 in the University of North Texas Eagle Student Services Center, Room 255. He will address current human rights and justice issues related to torture, U.S. foreign policy and the Iraq war. His appearance is co-sponsored by UNT Peace Studies, U.S. Tour of Duty and Peace Action Denton and the UNT Student Committee for International Peace. On Saturday, sessions begin at 8 a.m. with a welcome, coffee and registration and continue to 5 p.m. Speakers are national, regional and local educators and activists who will address a range of topics: 9:30 Veterans Panel Patrick Phillips, filmmaker, The Cost of War Vietnam Veteran Ray White Iraq Veteran and War Resistor "Mark", featured in The Cost of War 11:00 Break 11:20 Keynote Address - Kevin Martin, Executive Director, Peace Action National, Washington, D.C. Introduced by Karen Hadden, Peace Action Texas 12:35 Lunch Music by Johnny Case, Local Jazz Pianist 1:45 Grassroots Organizing - Joe Bageant, editor/writer, Winchester Virginia 2:45 Break 3:05 Local & Alternative Economy: Cecelia Hawkins, Living Wage Coalition of Brazos Valley Robert Waldrop, Oklahoma Food Coop 4:35 Networking Groups 5:15 What now? - concluding Remarks Oct 15 sessions are at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 2200 Bell Avenue. Advance registration for the Saturday portion of the Peace-In on Oct. 15 is required. Deadline is Oct. 8. Registration fees are: Students - $5, Non students - $10 with an additional $7.50 each for catered lunch during the networking session and music by Johnny Case. Registration information is at: http://www.peaceindenton.org. Sunday at 1:30 p.m. National Peace Action executive director Kevin Martin will address regional chapters of the organization. It is open to the public free. Peace Action Denton is an affiliate of the national Peace Action organization. PAD is a volunteer group committed to work for peace and justice. It works toward alternatives to war in settling international disputes, the promotion of community peacemaking, overcoming racism in the community, countering hate groups, reductions in military spending and conversion to a peace economy, and the abolition of weapons of mass destruction – nuclear, chemical and biological. Wow - I didn't get this in my mail...And i live in Denton!! I'll go to some of these lectures for sure. You should go! hopefully I will meet you there sgx, it would be swell to meet a peaceful individual who believes violence is no way to solve problems. |
