![]() | More Americans are interested in science than ever before. Leonardos and the Science Renaissance Seed Media Group http://www.seedmediagroup.com/press/...G_09.30.05.pdf Bullets: 1. SCIENCE IS A 21ST CENTURY OBSESSION More Americans are interested in science than ever before. Half of America has seen its interest in science increase in the past five years. In the 21st century America is interested in science more than in either sports or religion. America’s top four interests (ahead of science) are: current events, music, tv, and technology. 2. SCIENCE IS A GREAT WAY TO SPEND A FRIDAY NIGHT 3 out of 4 Americans are interested in science, in large part for its entertainment value. Maybe that’s why acclaimed films like A Beautiful Mind, hit television shows like CSI, and magazines like Seed have all seen such great popularity. Entertainment media like TV, films and magazines are among the main ways Americans get their science fix. 3. SCIENCE IS IN HOLLYWOOD AND ON THE RUNWAY When we asked Americans about the cultural battle between science and religion, we found that science has more influence across the board, even in parts of culture like fashion and film. What else does science influence more than religion? Food, transportation, health, technology and the environment. And what does religion influence more than science? Politics and art. 4. LOOKING INTO OUR CRYSTAL BALL Americans are interested in science for a lot of reasons...but the most important reason is that it tells them about the future. 86% of Americans say science helps them feel better equipped to deal with the future. 5. HELP, I NEED AN INSTRUCTION MANUAL! Americans are also using science as a way to help explain the big questions about the hows and whys of life. Science tells Americans how things work, how things change, shows them the links between things, and in general gives them answers! Perhaps this is an indication that Americans are trying to learn more about what’s behind the new century and their life in it. A trend that can account for the success of recent NY Times Bestsellers like Blink and Freakonomics. 6. WHEN EINSTEIN SPEAKS, AMERICANS LISTEN More Americans trust scientists than they do religious leaders or politicians. Scientists are among our most trusted American endorsers...leaving others like CEOs and even celebrities in the dust. 7. SCIENCE AND AMERICA'S SOCIAL CONSCIENCE Among the many science-related issues that captivate Americans, the environment and poverty make the top 3. Perhaps indicating that Americans are looking to science as much as to faith to help resolve our biggest social concerns. 8. LEONARDOS LEAD THE SCIENTIFIC RENAISSANCE Who are the people at the forefront of the scientific revolution? They are influential adults who are science savvy leading edge consumers. Their average age is 32. And they are at the cutting edge of tomorrow’s America. While only 36% of Leonardos are women, we anticipate that number will grow. 9. WHY DO WE CALL THEM LEONARDOS? Leonardos are characterized by one thing overall – they are true renaissance thinkers. They are more interested in science topics and issues than most people, but they are also interested in politics and art. In fact more than half say they like to learn about art, culture and history. 10. LEONARDOS PACK A PUNCH Leonardos influence more than America’s scientific renaissance. They influence American society in a host of other ways from civic issues and environmental concerns to fundraising. Leonardos are not afraid to get their hands dirty when it comes to leading social change in this country. 11. FOR LEONARDOS, SPACE IS THE PLACE Leonardos differ from the average American in their depth and range of science knowledge. But nowhere do they differ more than in their interest in space. Nearly all Leonardos are interested in space exploration. And 3 out of 4 Leonardos are interested in understanding more about how the universe works. 12. LEONARDOS HERALD A NEW ERA OF MARKET CO-CREATION Leonardos are leading edge consumers - they are among the first to try new things and they even see the science behind most brands (from Apple to Prada). But more than anything, Leonardo’s attitudes about brands could signal an enormous shift in consumer attitudes. They want to have input into everything that goes into what they buy: from ingredients and materials, to manufacturing, to packaging and yes, even into how products are advertised.
