I wish I was more well informed on that - I thought Iran supplied (amybe even runs) Syria... I do understand Russia has often worked to shield Iran so it makes sense in a downstream kinda way.

Russia currently could give one's rats ass about that. However, Russia is interested in recapturing lost provinces and lost military prowess. Challenging the US got Russia into the shithole she's in now. I doubt she's going to try again.
