Coordinator, and discuss human interest stories regarding solutions to nonviolence and also discuss the political will that is forming for a U.S. Dept of Peace and Nonviolence. The primary function of this cabinet-level department would be to research, articulate and facilitate nonviolent solutions to domestic and international conflict.

i have already emailed the person who is heading this up with a bunch of questions, some of which are ones that were raised on this forum earlier from Edwin and Xian, and i added some of my own as well.. i hope to get the answers tomorrow... and whatever happens i will post on here as to what i found out

thank you for doing so, i would be very interested to see how they respond. I will check my schedule and see if I can make it. I am a pretty damn busy guy, so no promises, but thanks for the specific invite as well.

well i got as many of the answers as i could that actually exist at this point

after thinking about it for awhile, i have come to the conclusion that i could provide you with some answers if the questions were asked again (i would want to know what the specific questions were) but that i'm sure that those who disagree would continue to disagree even if they were provided the answers.. and that i'm probably not the one that is going to be able to convince you to think differently on that... but if you care to have the questions answered then you can post them and i'll answer it the best i can with the information i've received

I was there as well, SGX. I had to leave early though. That lady was very informative.

I'll start it out...

How big of a budget does this department seek to obtain?
Where does the department plan to spend the budget?
What programs/departments could be cut/downsized to fund this new Department of Peace?

you should've introduced yourself... were you sitting kind of near the door? because if you were there when we got to the question part, i was the first one to ask a question... i was wearing a black shirt

well, the current legislation calls for the budget to be set at 2% of the DOD budget... which would currently be 10 billion... but they plan on changing that because obviously you don't want a budget that is dependent on another budget

were you there when she was answering all of these or are you asking so that the answers get posted on here for others to read?

either way, she said that 2/3 of the budget would be used domestically and 1/3 be used internationally. this is kinda where she lost me because she explained in general where the funds would be used but she didn't have the kind of specifics that i was looking for.. and the kind of specifics that would be required to convince people that this is a good idea. they pretty much weren't even enough to convince me but i realize that she just might not of had the answers but the answers could be out there.

that i don't know... but i didn't hear her say anything nor have i read anywhere that ANYTHING would be cut or downsized... or that it would be necessary to do so... but i could be wrong


the main thing i'm looking for is the specifics on the programs they plan to help or form... because 7 billion could go a long way but i want some more information from them

BUT

all those programs are only part of it... because i think the main part is the fact that you'd have the Sec of Peace be in on all meetings just like the Sec of State and Defense are... and they could provide information relating to the programs in the dept and just on nonviolent idiologies period... and i realize that many people think this is pointless... and i'm looking for more specifics as far as that goes as well

yea I was asking to get some answers posted on here for others to be informed (I should have let you know).

But yea - I thought that was you who was asking the questions at the beginning. I would have introduced myself but I had to split. I too was wearing a black shirt and was sitting at the long table very close to you.

I thought the lady was very informative but needed to check her emotions at the door. It is going to be hard to drum up new support for this department when every time she talks about it about she tears up. oh well - I thought the turn out was good; and a good amount of quality people as well.

well yeah but we will need to play on some emotions obviously, so it was nice to know that she cares... heartfelt stories are nice and they work... but what i want is some hardcore details... because when i'm thinking about trying to convince someone it's a good idea, i'm thinking of trying to convince people like Edwin and Xian... and i can't do that without the details... i probably couldn't do it even with the details because they might just disagree with everything... but i still want the details so at least i have a chance

and plus, i'm not even 100% i'm for this until i see those details... i still need some convincing before i'll support more bureaucracy... even if it's bureaucracy that is for nonviolence and peace

just to point you in a direction to look...

find out how it engages in fucntions that are not duplicative... that will be a primary objection... no good spending money to skin the cat twice

i agree xian.. and she ensured me that there would be new services and i asked her to tell the webmaster of the website to put those things in BOLD because she didn't have time to go into all of that with me

that was one of the details that i want to know
