All US passports will be implanted with remotely readable computer chips starting in October 2006, the Bush administration has announced.
Sweeping new State Department regulations issued on Tuesday say passports issued after that time will have tiny RFID chips that can transmit personal information including the name, nationality, sex, date of birth, place of birth and digitised photograph of the passport holder. Eventually, the government contemplates adding additional digitised data such as "fingerprints or iris scans".

so how long before id's get chipped?

i say by 2010

any bets?

Chase Rolls Out RFID Credit Cards in N.Y. and Philadelphia

InformationWeek | October 28 2005
By Steven Marlin

J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. said Thursday that it has begun rolling out its contactless credit cards, known as "blink," in the New York and Philadelphia metropolitan areas. To use the blink cards, customers wave the card near a reader at the checkout line. The reader emits a tone and lights up to signal payment confirmation.

Chase is delivering the cards, which use a radio-frequency identification chip, to two million customers in the New York metropolitan area and 900,000 customers in the Philadelphia metropolitan area.

The initial merchants that will accept blink are 7-Eleven, AMC Theatres, CVS, Duane Reade, Regal Entertainment, and Sony Style stores.

The blink cards, which also include a traditional magnetic stripe, can be used anywhere Visa and MasterCard are accepted.

In trials of the blink card, consumers appreciated the security of retaining possession of the card during the transaction, rather than swiping it or handing it to an employee, the bank said. They also praised the card's speed and convenience. The most significant time savings was realized in the drive-thru environment, where transaction time was reduced by as much as 20 seconds compared to cash. For merchants, the card speeds checkout times and lets customers spend more time shopping and less time waiting in line.

I think the new passports are a great idea. I'm sure that it would lessen the time that one spends in customs. Some people think that this chip is an invasion of privacy, but I think it will make life a lot more convenient & time efficient.

It is for this reason that I think they are a bad idea. Now, I'm all for using technology to aid us in the fight against things that hurt us - however, people generally don't see them as an "aid", they see them as a replacement to good old human eyes and instinct.

I support the new biometric passports (fyi those countries part of the visa waiver program - mostly europe - will also have them introduced by that time), however I have a horrible feeling that history will repeat itself as it did when the intelligence community suddenly got loads of satellites - they'll cut down on the human element and put far too much faith in to technology.

indeed it may - the question is - to what degree do you trust the government to 1) not misuse the additional information provided by the chip (which imo can't be much can it?) and more importantly to me 2) keep that data secure from others who may misuse it.

not sure the two issues are as directly related as you do but it is without doubt an incredibly important factor in the nosedive of quality our intel agencies took when they shifted away from human intelligence and twoards electronic surveillence

you best wallpaper your house in lead, lock the doors, have your food delivered through a secured airlock in a secret undergound location.
